THEORY OF GASES

Phases of Matter
Physical Properties of
Gases
• A gas can be compressed to a smaller volume
• Gases fill their containers uniformly
• Gases exert pressure
• Gases diffuse and mix with one another to form a
homogenous mixture
• The pressure of a gas depends on its temperature
Properties of Gases
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION UNITS OF
MEASUREMENT
PRESSURE (P) The force exerted by a Atmosphere (atm)
gas against the walls of mmhg
a container pascal
VOLUME (V) The space occupied by Liter (L)
the gas Milliliter (ml)
TEMPERATURE The kinetic energy or Celsius (°C)
(T) the motion of the gas Kelvin (K)
particles
QUANTITY (n) The amount of gas Grams (g)
Moles (n)
Kinetic Theory of
Gases
• It is a set of rules, expectations and
assumptions of how we expect gases to
behave.
o Ideal gas
• Explanation of the properties of gases
1. Gases consist of very small particles
that are far apart relative to their size.
2. Gas particles are in constant, random
motion. The moving particles
constantly collide with each other and
with the walls of the container.
3. Collisions between gas particles and
container walls are elastic collisions
4. There are no forces of attraction or
repulsion between gas particles
5. The average kinetic energy of gas
particles depends on the temperature
of the gas
Expandability

The process of these particles moving out is called

diffusion
