Drafting

Drafting is process of attenuating the loose assemblage

of fibers by passing it through a series of rollers.
Need for drafting

• To straighten the fibers in the strand.

• To parallize the fibers in the strand.
• To reduce the mess per unit length of the fiber strand.
Drafting System

Drafting System is known as the no. of rollers & how th

e rollers are arrange in the draw frame machine.
The drafting system is the heart of the draw frame and th
us the part which exerts the most decisive influence on q
uality.
Different type of drafting syste
m available in market
PLATT SACOLOWELL VERSAMATIC DRAFTING SYSTEM

 It is 3 over 4 drafting system.

 It can process fibre staple length from 1” to 2”.
 The middle roller does not touch bottom roller giving
‘SLIP- -DRAFTING’.
 The pressure exerted on top rollers are defferent .
SACM 4 OVER 4 DRAFTING SYSTEM

 It is four over four drafting system.

 A special metallic top and bottom rollers are used.
 Both top and bottom rollers are with flutes on them.
 The pressure on front and second top drafting rollers
are greater than third and back top drafting rollers.
RIETER POLAR DRAFTING SYSTEM

 In this drafting system, back pair of rollers followed by

two sets of ½ drafting systems.
 Second and third bottom rollers are smaller in
diameter to enable closer setting.
 The pressure exerted on top rollers are by pneumatic
loading 0.75 kg/sq. cm.
ZINSER TYPE 720 DRAFTING SYSTEM

 It is a modified version of 4/4 drafting system offering

tubular shaped web collector.
 For small setting, the second and fourth top rollers are
made movable.
 The draft is split up between the back and the front
zone.
3 over 3 pressure bar drafting system

 It is designed to run at a very high speed and a wide range of staple

length.
 It comprises three top and bottom rollers that are arranged for single
or two drafting zones and a small diameter pressure bar for fibre cont
rol.
 Main zone setting is adjusted according to fibre length by altering the
relative position of pressure bar and second top roller.
 For short staple, the bar is set forward and the second top roller is tilt
ed in forward direction.
 For longer staple, the bar is tilted backward and so is second top rolle
Whitin Roberts 4 over 5 drafting system

 This is also known as ‘universal system’ of 4/5 drafting sys

tem.
 There is a ½ drafting system in the middle.
 The setting between third and fourth bottom rollers being fi
xed.
 The use of small diameter second and third roller permits cl
oser
setting for short staple length fibre.
Weighing systems used in drafti
ng arrangement
Dead Weight System

d weight.
Top Arm Weight System

Coiled springs are used to give desi When he compressed air is supplie
red weighting. Coiled spring are pl d to the pressure hose it expands. A
aced in the saddle housing. s it expands it pushes the pressure p
in. The pressure pin connected with
pressure bar & pressure head which
is pulled downward direction.
Magnetic Weighting System

In Magnetic Weighting System temporary m

agnet are formed to weight the top rollers. T
hus, magnetic force exercise the necessary l
oading. The magnetic field is varied by chan
ging the current that energies the magnetism
& thus the loading on the rollers are altered.
