Narration: So, your manager has a newly
hired employee and won’t be able to train
them and leaves it up to you to bring him up

do this job every day! It will be a piece of
cake showing this rookie how do your job,
right?

Dramatic Question
Title/Captions: Tbe Situation

Narration: I know this feeling and it feels embarrassing

not being able to pass that skill down to someone else!
That’s why, when it comes to training hands on, it’s best to
plan. Plan for the end result of what the person will be doing
on their own. Plan how you will convey these skills in the
most simple way possible. Plan on how they will progress to
the point where they are confident on their own!
But how do you give a good, effective hands-on training?

Title/Captions: SAF

You Speak as you Act, Ask Questions Constantly, and
Give and Receive Feedback

Introducing SAF
Title/Captions: Speak as You Act

Narration: Speaking through as you act out your actions gives the
person context. This context is not only on what you’re doing but WHY you
are doing it. For example, when I train someone in my grocery’s produce
section, I tell them to “always be two handed. One hand can do a lot but
two hands do double!” This way, fruits and vegetables can be put out more
efficiently.
That’s your why! If I didn’t say anything and just used two hands, they will
see me put up bananas, but not really know whether it matters how I am
doing it.

Title/Captions: Ask Questions Constantly

Narration: Ask Questions Constantly!

Are they understanding what you’re saying? Does the reasoning behind your
technique make sense to them? Can they do what you did just now? These
are all questions that get into their head! They engage the learner and create
an active learning environment, ripe for them to take everything in.

Ask Questions Constantly

Title/Captions: Give and Receive Feedback

Narration: Give and Receive Feedback!

Playing off the questions, let them ask you questions! Learning styles of
all types, including hands on, is a two way streak. It is very important to
get both parties active! What can you, the trainer, do better to help the
learner understand? What does the learner need improvements on?
What is the learner doing really well?! The answers to these questions
inspire development and better performance.

Give and Receive Feedback

Title/Captions: none

Narration: And there you go, SAF! You Speak as

you Act, Ask Questions Constantly, and Give and
Receive Feedback. Once you put it into practice
and plan the end result of your hands-on training
sessions, it will feel natural as a learning
environment becomes a professional one.
