How does it really work?

Blended learning combines traditional direct instructions from the

teacher and instruction – practice on a computer/tablet
What does it look like?
What should we know about the benefits -
pros of blended learning and teaching?
• Before considering the known benefits of blended learning
(and indeed what its shortcomings might be), it would
be useful to remind ourselves of the key pedagogical
approaches in English language teaching.
• In teaching two things are interrelated: first, what to
teach; then, how to teach it. The linguistic theories of
the last 50 years have shed light on the former and
applied linguists have given us help with the latter.
Learning happens everywhere,
not just in the classroom
• The key to a successful blended learning approach is to use the
strengths of each medium appropriately, combining the two different
learning environments in an integrated way so that each medium
complements the other.

Having known all the previous aspects, we
can say that the main Pros about blended
learning and teaching are:
1. Flexibility and responding more appropriately to learning styles
The inherent flexibility of a blended approach allows learners to study
any time they choose, anywhere and at their own pace, making sure
that they fully understand new concepts before they move on. It also
helps teachers to respond more easily to learners ' different styles by
maximizing the strength of each environment.
2. It makes students more excited to learn
When technology is integrated into school lessons, learners are more
likely interested in, focused on and excited about subjects they are
studying since it is something they are familiar with.
Moreover…
3. Access to rich interactive input
Blended learning offers rich interactive input that is accessed through
authentic video, audio, text, visuals providing meaningful content
relevant to learners ‘ needs and interests, either pre-selected by the
teacher(lower learners) or discovered by learners when surfing the
internet(higher levels).
Last, but not the least
4. It prepares student for the future
By learning to use technology in the classroom both teacher and
students will develop skills essential for 21st century. But more that
that, students will learn the critical thinking and workplace skills they
will need to be successful in the future.
But, what are the Cons of blended learning
and teaching?
1. Strong technological dependence
The tech resources and tools need to be reliable, easy to use, up to date
so that the use of the Internet has meaningful impact on learning
experience.
2. Lack of IT knowledge
It literacy can serve as a significant barrier for students attempting to
access the course materials. The availability of tech support is a
must.
3. Students can fall behind
The use of lecture recording technologies can result in students falling
behind on material.Nearly half of the students will wait or watch
several weeks worth video in one sitting, rather than on regular
