A Glimpse into his Early Life
• Ma was born on 10 September 1964 in Hangzhou,
Zhejiang, China

• Began studying English at a young age by conversing with


English-speakers at Hangzhou international hotel.

• He would ride 70 miles on his bicycle to give tourists


tours of the area to practice his English for nine years.

• He became pen pals with one of foreigners, who
ALIBABA nicknamed him "Jack" because he found it hard to
pronounce his Chinese name

• Ma attended Hangzhou Teacher's Institute (currently

• Ma applied for 30 jobs but got rejected. One of the
workplace from where he got rejected is KFC

• In 1994 he heard about internet and in 1995 went to US


along with his friends

• Made an “ugly” website and received interests from

• From 1998 to 1999, Ma headed an information
technology company established by the China
International Electronic Commerce Center, a department
of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic
Cooperation.

• In 1999, he quit and returned to Hangzhou with his team


to found Alibaba, a China-based business-to-business

500,000 yuan.

• In October 1999 and January 2000, Alibaba twice won a

A Glimpse into his Early Life
• Koum was born in Kiev, Ukraine

• He grew up in Fastiv, and moved with his mother and


grandmother to Mountain View, California in 1992,where a
social support program helped the family to get a small two-
bedroom apartment ,at the age of 16

• His father had intended to join the family later, but he never

A Glimpse into his Early Life
• He also joined a group of hackers that began in 1996
called w00w00, where he met the future founders
of Napster, Shawn Fanning and Jordan Ritter

• In 1997, Koum met Brian Acton while working at Ernst &


Young as a security tester

engineer. He quit school shortly thereafter.

WHATSAPP • Over the next nine years, Koum and Acton worked there
together. In September 2007 they both left Yahoo!
The Business Idea
• In January 2009, Koum bought an iPhone and realized that
the then seven-month-old App Store was about to spawn a
whole new industry of apps.

• He visited his friend Alex Fishman and the two talked for
hours about Koum's idea for an app over tea at Fishman's
kitchen counter.

A Glimpse into his Early Life

• Systrom was born in 1983 in Holliston, Massachusetts. He is


the son of Diane (Pels), a marketing executive at Zipcar

• Systrom attended Middlesex School in Concord,


Massachusetts, where he was introduced to computer
programming.

A Glimpse into his Early Life
• He spent the winter term of his third year in Florence, where
he studied photography.

the Mayfield Fellows Program at Stanford University.

• The fellowship led to his internship at Odeo, the company

• Worked as a Google Employee for two years

• After leaving Google he worked on BURBN (a location


recommendation startup) and pitched it to Baseline
Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz at a party.

• Within 2 weeks of quitting his job, he received


US$500,000 seed funding round from both Baseline

INSTAGRAM • While in San Francisco, Systrom and Mike Krieger built
Burbn, a HTML 5 check-in service, into a product that
allowed users to do many things: check into locations, make
plans (future check-ins), earn points for hanging out with
friends, post pictures, and much more
Career
• However, recalling their studies in Mayfield Fellows Program,
Krieger and Systrom identified that Burbn contained too
many features and the users did not want a complicated
product

• They decided to focus on one specific feature, photo-


sharing

video-sharing social networking service Instagram with Mike
