POPLITEAL
VESSELS:
(POPLITEAL ARTERY AND POPLITEAL VEIN ) AND
TIBIAL NERVE.
POPLITEAL ARTERY:
• Popliteal artery is the continuation of femoral artery.
• It begins at the opening in adductor magnus (Adductor Hiatus).
• It runs downwards and slightly lateral to reach the lower border
of popliteus.
• At its far end,it splits into anterior and posterior
tibial arteries.
• During its course, the popliteal artery branches into other significant blood
vessels.
• These include:
• SURIAL ARTERY:
• Various types of Genicular Arteries.
• Superior medial genicular artery.
• Inferior medial genicular artery.
• Superior lateral genicular artery.
• Inferior lateral genicular artery.
RELATION OF THE POPLITEAL
ARTERY :
• Anterior or deep to the
artery,from above downwards are :
• The Popliteal surface of the
femur.
• The back of the knee joint
• The fascia covering the popliteus
muscle.
• Posteriorly or
superficially ,the artery is
related to popliteal vein
and further posteriorly
to the tibial nerve.
• Laterally ,the upper part of
artery is related to biceps
femoris and the lower part
of the artery is related to
plantaris and lateral head of
gastrocnemius.
• Medially ,the upper part of the arteries related to
semi-membranosus and the lower part of the
artery is related to tibial nerve ,popliteal vein and
medial head of gastrocnemius.
POPLITEAL VEIN:
• Popliteal vein lies between popliteal artery and tibial nerve in the
popliteal fossa.
• The popliteal vein is formed by junction of the comitantes of the
posterior and anterior tibial arteries.
• It passes through the opening in adductor magnus to become the
femoral vein.
• The tributaries of the popliteal vein are :
• Veins that correspond to branches given off
by popliteal artery.
• And small sapheneous vein.
TIBIAL NERVE (L4,L5,S1,S2,S3):
