Introduction
 According to a recent report by the World Health
Organization, 322 million people are suffering from
depression.

 In the last decade, people have started to openly

express their activities, feelings, and thoughts on social
network platforms.

 These users are generating a large volume of data,

which is attracting researchers and companies in hope
of understanding hidden patterns in data and obtaining
new insights.
Introduction(Continued)
 Given the relationship between mental health problems
and life satisfaction, it is possible to detect people with
mental health problems on the basis of their expression
of any message or emotion providing information about
their life satisfaction.

 We aim to explore correlations between life

satisfaction, and depression in social network users,
especially Facebook.
Existing Systems and their
Major Problems
 Only one kind of scale is used to measure depression
in existing systems, which is not sufficient.

 Stress detection from only the user’s Facebook post is

insufficient. They might not always reveal their stress
directly in a post.
Proposed Model
 Explore the relationship between life satisfaction and
depression in social network users.

 Develop a multilevel predictive model to detect users

with depression.
Steps to Develop Model
 Data sets
 Ground Truth Measures
 Data Pre-Processing
 Online Behavior Information Extraction
 Predictive Models
Data Sets
 Datasets will be taken from myPersonality.
 Allows academic researchers to register as
collaborators and access a comprehensive list of
datasets.

 They provide different psychological results from

participants and some of their anonymized Facebook
profiles.
Ground Truth Measures
 Satisfaction with Life Scale
 Center for Epidemiological Study Depression Scale
Data Pre-Processing
 Datasets will be cleaned by removing unsuitable data.
 Python Bindings for Compact Language Detector 2 will
be used to detect language from posts. Users with
fewer than 50 English posts will be removed.
Online Behavior Information
Extraction
 Demographics: Age, gender
 Activities: Relationship status, number of likes, number
of status updates, number of group memberships,
number of photo tags for each user

 Posting time: Detects a symptom of depression

 Text meaning: Linguistic Inquiry and Word
Count(LIWC) will be used to extract relevant
information.
Predictive Models
 Life satisfaction predictive model: Labels users with life
satisfaction and dissatisfaction. We will use techniques
such as support vector machine(SVM) with a radial
basis function(RBF) kernel, logistic regression, decision
tree, and naïve Bayes.

 Depression detecting model: Uses the same features

as LF model. Outputs will be calculated from CES-D
scores of each user.
Advantages of Proposed
Model
 Predicts life satisfaction in users and uses this
prediction to detect users with depression.

 This model can also predict a negative correlation

between depression and life satisfaction.

 Enables online personalized interventions, which

provides suitable help, and recommendations.

 Helps doctors and psychologists get better and more

frequent information about a patient.
