Instrumentation Nomenclature

 Phased array units (FOCUS or QuickScan) are

defined as two numbers divided by a colon, e.g.,
32:128.
 This refers to an instrument with 32 multiplexed
pulsers and 128 individual channels.
 R/D Tech instruments are supplied in binary sizes,
e.g., 16:64, 16:128, 32:256, ….
 Instruments are custom-built for the application,
except OmniScan -> standard product.
 Typically have conventional channels as well for
additional scans.

Industrial Product Line

 An economical
solution for
industrial
requirements, e.g.,
in-line inspections
on production plant.
 Rack-mounted.
 High PRF.
 Similar capabilities
to FOCUS, but less
QuickScan PA flexible.

Sizing Your Phased Array Instrument

 The power of instrument required depends on the

application.
 For example, if coverage is the key issue, then a
lot of elements are needed. However, it may only
be necessary to pulse 16 elements in a group, so a
16:256 may be adequate.
 If the application has limited access, but needs a
lot of steering, then an instrument with many
pulsers but relatively fewer elements, e.g., 32:64,
may be better.

New MultiChannel Software

New multichannel software allows multi-angle or multi-

display inspections simultaneously.
Good for weld code inspections or multi-information scans.
Can run eight channels, but can only display three at a time.

Merging of data

 Raw UT data generated by different focal laws

(angles, focusing depths) can be merged off-line
to generate new UT data
 Merged data contain maximum amplitude of the
different focal laws
 Merged data can be treated as regular data, and
visualized as VC Top (C-scan), Side (B-scan), and
End (D-scan) Views
