• When Hoover was elected people thought the economy was good
• Problems- industries like railroads, textiles and mining made more
goods than people could buy, so businesses lost money
• Farmers produced more than they could sell, so they lost money
• Majority of Americans had small income and little savings, couldn’t
find work
• People had to buy goods on credit, putting them in debt
• People bought on speculations, risky Wall Street bets

• Stock market crashed in 1929- investors lost everything

The New Deal Slows Down


• Supreme Court didn’t support New Deal programs, thought it gave
fed. Gov. too much power controlling US econ.  they struck
down laws
• FDR’s solution  add more justices to overrule those that
opposed (both parties opposed this)
• FDR didn’t end up needing to b/c of retirements and deaths, got his
court
• FDR believed country was doing better so stopped New Deal
policies  economy went back down until WWII
