WHAT IS SMART GRID?
3

 An intelligent electricity- delivery system:

 energy suppliers and consumers: interconnect through a network
 Smart meters:
 are installed at homes and business
 monitor energy consumption
 transmit that information back to energy providers
 Energy providers :
 track energy consumption
 automatically throttle down energy consumption on a granular level when
demand gets too high.

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

Decentralization
5

To form grids which are more smart, receptive

and flexible than present power grids, Smart
grid employ decentralization process
Substation: Information gathering
and decision making
Electricity dispatching center:
strategic management of grid
intelligence
Computerized management:
transmission and distribution

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

WHO ARE USING SMART
GRID?
6

 Individual consumers

 Corporate participation

 Government regulators

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

HOW SMART GRID IS USED?
7

 Faster communication between the energy company

and the end consumer

 Electricity is sent from:

Energy Distribution destination

company center

 Allows energy companies to track areas of high use,

identify possible outages, and provide the proper
service.

SMART METER
10

 Recognizes and details electric consumption

 Relays information to central monitoring stations

 Will replace traditional meters

 Power outrage notification and power quality

monitoring

 Time of day charges.

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

ADVANTAGES OF SMART GRID
11

 Reduces the cost of blackouts $$$

 Helps measure and reduce energy consumption and

costs

 Helps businesses reduce their carbon footprint

 Opens up new opportunities for tech

companies meaning more jobs created!!!

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

DISADVANTAGES OF SMART
GRID
12

 Biggest concern: security and privacy

 Smart Grid: use
 automated meters,
 two-way communications: between a power consumer
and provider
 and advanced sensors
 Some types of meters can be hacked
 Hacker:
 gain control of thousands, even millions, of meters
 increase or decrease the demand for power
Seminar presentation 1-May-19
DISADVANTAGES (cont.)
13

 Not simply a single component

 Various technology components:

 software, the power generators, system integrators,
etc.

 Expensive for consumer: $60 per month

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

SMART GRID FUTURE
14

 In the near future, will not be any vast development

 Risky because of financial demands and regulations

 In the long-run, attitudes will change, wide spread

usage of the smart grid from every business to every
home just like the Internet

Seminar presentation 1-May-19

CONCLUSION
15

 Smart Grid is a concept designed to provide

electricity in more efficient way by better allocating
electricity according to consumer’s wants.
 It integrated multiple energy sources and avoid
over-generation as well.
 In foreign countries, namely the UK and USA,
started to implement as they see it as a solution of
energy and environment pressure in their own
country.
