GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
• Uruguay is located in south America between
Brazil, Argentina and it borders with the
Atlantic Ocean.
• It covers a total surface of 176,215 square
kilometers.
IMPORTANT CITIES

• The capital of Uruguay is Montevideo an its


located in the south of the country in the
coast of the Plata river.
• Other important cities are Punta del Este,
Salto and Las Piedras.
DEMOGRAPHY
• The total population of Uruguay is 3,457
million people, and only in the capital live
1,381 million people.
• The 51% are men and the 49% women
ETHNIC GROUS
• The 96% of the total
population comes from
European descendent,
being the rest natives and
Asians.
• The 41% of the
population are Catholics,
the 12% are protestants,
the 41% have no religion
and the 6% that remains
have other religions
TYPE OF GOVERMENT
It is a presidential representative democratic repubilc. The president
is both the head of state (like the king in Spain) and head of
government.

 Executive branch: the government.


 Judicial branch: it follows a civil law based on the Spanish civil
code.
 Legislative branch: it is in charge reforming the laws of Uruguay.

The government system in Uruguay consists of a mixed democracy


and the President of Uruguay is Tabaré Vázquez.
COSTUMES AND TRADITIONS

• Asado: One of the typical Uruguay traditions is


the asado or barbeque. Which functions as an
excuse to meet with family or friends and
shore a moment around the grill.

CANDOMBE: It is a dance that is palyed in the streets, mainly
in the capital of the country: Montevideo. In neighborhoods
you can listen to the comparses, made up of at least twenty
drums, creating a unique dialogue, wich forms a rhythim that
invites you to dance.

• Drinking yerba mate, similar to tea, and it´s


usually shared among a group. This costume
goes back to Guaraní native tribes. Mate is
also a symbol of friendship and equality.

• Watching and playing football. It´s the most


popular sport in Uruguay. Uruguayans love to
take in football, whether on TV, radio or in live
in the film and to root for their favorite team.
PRESENT SITUATION

• Uruguay stands out in Latin America for being


an egalitarian society ad for it´s high per
capita incoming, low level of inequality and
poverty and the almost complete absence of
extreme poverty.

• In relative terms it´s middle class is the largest
in America, and represents the 60% of the
population. Uruguay occupies the top spots in
the region in terms of well being, such as
Human development index, human opportunity
index and economic freedom index
PRESENT SITUATION
• Moderated poverty went from 32.5% in 2006 to
9.4% in 2016 and extreme poverty from 2.5% to
0.2% in the same period.
• Almost 87% of the population in Uruguay over
65 is covered by the pension system, one of
the highest coefficients in Latin America.
WHAT IS ECOSOC?
ECOSOC stands for the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

It is one of the five principal organs of the United Nations.

It is responsible for coordinating the economic, social and related


work of fifteen U.N. specialized agencies.

One of its recent projects (24th May 2018) is about improving the
quality of buildings, in terms of climate change. This project is
expected to be finished by 2021
WOMEN WAGE GAP

• In Uruguay the wage gap is high, approximately


the 35% of women's are less likely to have the
same economic opportunities, thin means that
in the area of economic participation Uruguay
scored a 0.65 out of one.
WOMEN IN RURAL AREAS
According to the data of the National Institute of Statistics
in Uruguay, there are about one hundred and seventy five
thousand people living in rural areas, and forty three per cent of
that population are women.
Women in the rural world are at a social disadvantage in
reference to men
GENDER VIOLENCE
In Uruguay gender violence is so serious that every forteen
minutes we recieve a report. That is to say we revieved one
hundred and four complaints of gender violence in one day in
the last ten months of 2017 and those who have been attacked
are mainly women, children, girls and teenagers
WOMEN IN EDUCATION
 Women in education are a big number, over 50%, but
unfortunately only the 22% have reach high charges.
 The good thing is that 99 out of 100 girls goes to school
and receives education, this could probably change the
statistics in a few years
OPINION AS A COUNTRY
We reaffirm the commitment of the United Nations to
put on end to this type of violence and continue working to
end it.

For us, at the United Nations, violence against women


and girls continues to be one of the most serious violations of
human rights
