ENERGY CONSERVATION THROUGH INCREASED EMISSIVITY IN FURNACES : I.Benko
Technical Study
Emissivity of refractories drops as the temperature increases
Example: if the emissivity of a given type of a refractory brick is 0.9 at a temperature of 130°C,
at 1030 °c the emissivity might well be 0.5
Q=σ ε[T4surface-T4Stock]
ε: Emissivity
σ: Stefan Boltzmann constant 5.76*10-8Wm2K-4
Lets consider
T surface ( Temperature of Hot refractory surface) = 1300°C i.e. 1573K
T Stock ( Temperature of stock Desired)= 1200 °C i.e. 1473 K
Emissivity of Uncoated Surface : 0.5
Emissivity of Coated Surface: 0.8
Heat emitted From Coated & Non Coated Surface can be easily calculated using above stated Law
Q=σ ε[T4surface-T4Stock]
Radiative capacity of a coated réfractories hot face will be much higher than a non
coated refractory operating in similar condition
