INTRODUCTION
WRS are reinforced or prestressed concrete structures
Water tanks (rectangular and circular)
Reservoirs
Swimming pools
Ponds
Elevated tanks
Sewage treatment and disposal tanks
Crack width is one of the important factors which can be controlled by
proper design and detailing.
WRCS are designed as crack free structures to eliminate any leakage or
percolation.
CATEGORIES OF WRCS
Tanks resting on ground
Underground tanks
Elevated tanks
Structural action in Rectangular Water Tanks
Both top and bottom hinged condition Top free and bottom hinged condition
• If tank dimensions are not more than 15m, then this can be reduced to 0.24% for HYSD bars and
0.4% for MS bars
• In walls and slabs less than 200mm thickness, the total steel area may be placed in one face.
• For ground slabs less than 300mm thick, the total steel area shall be placed near to the upper face.
Mehul S. Kishori, Chirag N. Patel have found that the moments in rectangular
tank computed as per coefficients given IS 3370 Part 4 were more than the
values obtained from FE analysis using Staad Pro. The Free top and hinged base
condition resulted in greater moment than the hinged base and hinged top
condition.
DESIGN OF RECTANGULAR WRCS
At the instance of clicking command button “Design Tables”, the following output in
“.XLS” format is shown in “EXCEL” window. This summary output is compact.
The interface can generate automatically design tables for both conditions for the
following configurations.
