Codes of practice IS 3370

• Part 1: 2009 General requirements,

• Part 2: 2009 Reinforced concrete structures,
• Part 3: 1967 Prestressed concrete structures
• Part 4: 1967 Design Table
DESIGN APPROACHES

1. Limit state design approach

The design procedure as per LSD is covered in CL 4.4 of IS 3370 Part 2 – 2009 .
a) Limit state of collapse
b) Limit states of serviceability
* Deflection
* Cracking
2. Deemed to satisfy approach
As per CL 4.4.3.1 of IS 3370 Part 2 -2009, the crack widths for RC members in WRCS may be deemed
to be satisfactory.

3. Working stress method

The design procedure as per WSD is covered in CL 4.5 of IS 3370 Part 2 – 2009
Detailing requirements
As per CL 8.1.1 of IS 3370 part2 – 2009 regarding the minimum reinforcement in walls,
floors and roofs the following guide lines are suggested:
• Steel area within each surface zone  0.35% of the surface zone for HYSD bars and 0.64% for
MS bars.

• If tank dimensions are not more than 15m, then this can be reduced to 0.24% for HYSD bars and
0.4% for MS bars

• In walls and slabs less than 200mm thickness, the total steel area may be placed in one face.
• For ground slabs less than 300mm thick, the total steel area shall be placed near to the upper face.

• Bar spacing = Min (300mm, thickness of the section).

Literature Review
 Yogesh Kumar Bajpai, Saurabh Pare(2009) have concluded that, the member
size remained same when designed by Working Stress Method as per both IS
3370 (1967) and IS 3370 (2009).

 Mehul S. Kishori, Chirag N. Patel have found that the moments in rectangular
tank computed as per coefficients given IS 3370 Part 4 were more than the
values obtained from FE analysis using Staad Pro. The Free top and hinged base
condition resulted in greater moment than the hinged base and hinged top
condition.
DESIGN OF RECTANGULAR WRCS

Design a rectangular water tank 225 cum capacity situated on ground

with free top and hinged base connection.
Procedure

Moment and shear coefficients

Horizontal and vertical moment at different locations (kNm)

M1(y) = 9.81*53*0.054 = 66 M7(y) = 9.81*53*-0.064 = -78

M2(y) = 9.81*53*-0.058 = -71 M8(y) = 9.81*53*0 = 0
M3(y) = 9.81*53*- 0.058 = -71 M5(x) = 9.81*53*0.037 = 45
M4(y) = 9.81*53*-0.023 = -28.2 M6(x) = 9.81*53*-0.013 = -15.94
M5(y) = 9.81*53*0.042 = 51 M7(x) = 9.81*53*-0.013 = -15.94
M6(y) = 9.81*53*-0.064 = -78 M8(x) = 9.81*53*0.001 =1.23

Shear at different locations (kN)

V2(z) = 9.81*52*0.1 = 25 V9(z) = 9.81*52*0.38 = 93

V3(z) = 9.81*52*0.01 = 2.5 V10(z) = 9.81*52*-0.583 = -143
V6(z) = 9.81*52*0.38 = 93 V11(z) = 9.81*52*-0.44 = -108
V7(z) = 9.81*52*0.26 = 64 V12(z) = 9.81*52*0.24 = 59

SCOPE & OBJECTIVES
SCOPE
• Development of an interface to automate the process of design and detailing of
ground level rectangular water retaining concrete structures
• Design algorithms as per IS 3370-2009 are followed.
• The automation is accomplished through the development of an interface by using
the VBA environment in EXCEL.
OBJECTIVES
• To generate detailed design reports in “xls” and “txt” formats.
• To make a study about the analysis and design of water tanks.
• To generate design tables for quick reference to optimize the design.
• To create a seamless environment for automatic transfer of design data to create
detailed structural drawings in Auto CAD.
METHODOLOGY
 The interface is developed by using Visual Basic for Application (VBA) within Excel
environment. The example problem reported in Chapter 2 is used to validate the software.
 Design algorithms are developed, as per IS 3370-2009. The design tables such as Tables 5,
6, 7 and 8 in IS 3370 part IV for moment and shear coefficients in walls. Suitable OCR
software is used to convert the files from original references in to editable formats to
eliminate the chances of errors during reproduction.
 The design results are reported in txt and preformatted EXCEL sheets
 Design results are used to generate AutoCAD drawings through the program by using the
commands of AutoCAD.
 Design tables are prepared in xls format for geometrical sizes frequently encountered in
practice.
VBA INTERFACE FOR AUTOMATION OF DESIGN AND DETAILING
OF GL - R – WRCS
.txt output
At the instance of clicking command button “TXT Output”, the following output in “.txt” format is
shown in “Notepad” window. This detailed output has all the design details and is expected to be
useful for documentation purpose.
.xls output
At the instance of clicking command button “XLS Output”, the output in “.XLS”
format is shown in “EXCEL” window. This detailed output has all the design
equations and details.

Auto CAD drawing

At the instance of clicking command button “AutoCAD”, the output in “.dwg” format
is shown in “Auto CAD” window. This seamless feature is very helpful and eliminates
the chances of translation errors during preparation of detailed drawings. The various
drawing entities are placed in different layers.
Design Tables

At the instance of clicking command button “Design Tables”, the following output in
“.XLS” format is shown in “EXCEL” window. This summary output is compact.

The interface can generate automatically design tables for both conditions for the
following configurations.

"3 x 9 x 9 ; 3 x 9 x 7.5 ; 3 x 9 x 6 ; 3 x 9 x 5.25 ; 3 x 9 x 4.5 ; 3 x 9 x 3.75 ; 3 x 9 x 3 ; 3 x 9 x 2.25 ; 3 x 9 x 1.5"

"3 x 6 x 6 ; 3 x 6 x 5.25 ; 3 x 6 x 4.5 ; 3 x 6 x 3.75 ; 3 x 6 x 3 ; 3 x 6 x 2.25 ; 3 x 6 x 1.5"
"3 x 4.5 x 4.5 ; 3 x 4.5 x 3.75 ; 3 x 4.5 x 3 ; 3 x 4.5 x 2.25 ; 3 x 4.5 x 1.5"
"3 x 3 x 3; 3 x 3 x 2.25; 3 x 3 x 1.5"
WORK SUMMARY AND GENERAL CONCLUSIONS
 An attempt is made to develop an interface to automate the process of design and detailing of
ground level rectangular water retaining concrete structures. The automation is achieved through
the development of an interface by using the VBA environment in EXCEL.
 The interface has design modules as per IS 3370-2009 and has all the required tables built into it
to get all the moment and shear coefficients for the design of walls and base slab.
 It has modules to report the results in the interface itself for immediate viewing, output the
results in TXT and preformatted XLS files for documentation and design review processes.
 It can translate all the design details required to produce AutoCAD drawings.
 It can also generate summary of design results for different sizes of GL-R-WRCS in the form of
tables in XLS format for quick reference in design offices.
