infectious agents.

• To prevent acquiring occupational diseases

and avoid injuries through the use of
appropriate protective equipment.
Definition of Terms
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)-
Specialized clothing or equipment worn for
protection against a hazard.1 PPE includes items
such as goggles, respirators, masks, gloves and
gowns (OSHA)

• SmartMed staff shall follow proper donning and

doffing of PPE.
Selection of PPE
1. Type of Anticipated Exposure
-touch, sprays, splashes, volume of blood and
body fluids that might penetrate clothing.
-category of isolation precautions.

2. Durability and Appropriateness of the

PPE to the task.
-how resistant to fluids.
Selection of PPE
3. Fit (optional)
Gloves
Gloves
Purpose: Protect the hands

Glove Material: vinyl, latex (allergy), nitrile

Types: sterile or non-sterile

Must be Single use

Gloves
• Should fit the hands- not too loose or too tight

• Work from “clean to dirty”

• Change gloves when torn and heavily soiled

.
4.1.1 Use of gloves does not replace the need for hand hygiene;
4.1.2Wear sterile gloves when performing aseptic procedures;
4.1.3Clean gloves can be worn when performing procedures that do not require aseptic technique.

Gloves

• Use of gloves does not replace the need for hand

hygiene.

• Wear sterile gloves when performing aseptic

procedures

• Clean gloves can be worn when performing

procedures that do not require aseptic
technique.
Gloves
• Staff performing blood extraction and I.V.
cannulation must always wear clean gloves.

• Limit opportunities for “touch

contamination”
PROTECT YOURSELF, OTHERS AND THE
ENVIRONMENT!!!
Gloves
-Don’t touch your face or adjust PPE with
contaminated gloves.

-Don’t touch environmental surfaces except as

necessary during patient care.
Gloves
• Remove gloves as soon as procedure is done and
before leaving the patients in their rooms, at
their homes or in the clinical areas where clinical
procedures are done.
Gown and Apron
Gown and Apron
• Purpose: Protect skin and clothing

• Must be resistant to fluid penetration.

Gown and Apron
• Use sterile gown in procedures requiring aseptic
technique.

• Wear a clean, disposable gown on procedures and

patient-care activities that are likely to generate
splashes or sprays of blood, body fluids, secretions,
or excretions.

• Remove contaminated gown after task completion

and before leaving the patient's environment.
Face Protection: Goggles
Face Protection: Goggles
• Purpose: Protect the eyes

• Must be snug fit over and around the eyes.

• Personal glasses do not substitute goggles.

• Recommended anti-fog features.

Face Protection: Face shields
• Purpose: Protect face, nose, mouth, eyes

• Should cover forehead, extend below chin and

wrap around face.

• Maybe worn with goggles for added protection

• Can substitute mask or goggles (wound

irrigation)
Face Protection: Face shields
Respiratory Protection: Masks
Respiratory Protection: Masks
• Purpose: Protect nose and mouth

• Wear mask before commencing a clinical

procedure when there is an anticipated contact
thru splashes with blood and body fluids.
Respiratory Protection: Masks
• Wear mask before entering the patient’s area, in
clinical areas or during home visits, if patient is
suspected for a respiratory infection or high risk
of spreading infection.

• Should fully cover nose and mouth.

Respiratory Protection: Masks
• not intended to be used more than once. If mask
is damaged or soiled, or if breathing through the
mask becomes difficult, remove the facemask,
discard it safely, and replace it with a new one.
Respiratory Protection: Respirators
• Purpose: Protect mouse/nose; protect
respiratory tract from airborne infections.

• Face mask were designed to protect the sterile

field and work environment from spit and
mucous generated by the wearer.
Face masks vs. N95 Respirator
Respiratory Protection: Masks and
Respirators
• Face mask: < 70% protection

• N95 Respirator: Filters 95 to 99% aerosol

particles
Respiratory Protection: Masks and
Respirators
• <70% is not too bad when compared to zero
percent protection

• N95 particulate mask are recommended to

protect Healthcare workers. But if you're going
to use it, make sure it Fits well, NO GAP. make
sure you are able to Breathe well, and make sure
you don't reuse it. If not, you'll still be better
off with the <70% protection you get from
a regular face mask.
