History: Mission University

◈ Historically Black University in the


Virginia/D.C./Metro area
◈ Founded in 1890
◈ Named after Mission Newspaper, an
abolitionist newspaper in the 1800s
◈ 6,500 students
◈ 3,000 residential students

Mission Statement
Mission University will educate students by providing a learning
environment in which they can discover, examine and transmit
knowledge, diversity, leadership and values. The learning
environment will be academically aggressive, employing and
developing an understanding and appreciation of a keen awareness of
how their actions and choices affect the world around them. Mission
University will help students to find and develop their highest
potential of intellectual, physical and human growth, by combining
academic and intercultural activities during their time here. Mission
University will be able to do all of this by attracting students from
diverse social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. Mission University
will especially try to attract those groups that have been underserved
by other higher education

Vision Statement
Mission University will act as a bridge for students to make a
positive change in their personal life, work, and community. As
their institution, we will help them to find different ways to
combine their academic knowledge and their interaction with
diversity to then, delivered the most effective changes in their
lives and their community. Faculty, staff, and students will
utilize all of their knowledge, energy, purpose, and gratitude to
complete this. Mission University will also have a
transformative impact on the student’s life and their community
through continual development of education, creativity, and
cultural awareness.
