Definition

 Need Analysis is the first step in developing


Curriculum. (Richard (1995:1))
 The activities involved in gathering information that
will serve as the basis for the developing a
curriculum that will meet the learning needs of a
particular group of students. (Brown (1995:35))
 The scope of needs analysis is primarily not only
based on the learning needs of students, but also
many factors in the environment that should be
considered. (Storey (2007))
Goals and Contents

 Determination of who students are.


 Determination of students language abilities.
 Determination of which language skills, strategies,
content, and experience.
 Determination of gap between what students are
able to do.
A. The Purpose of Needs Analysis

 To find out what languages skills a learners needs.


 To help determine if an existing course adequately
addresses.
 To determine which students from a group are most
in need of training.
 To identify a change of direction.
 To identify a gap between what students are.
 To collect information about a particular problems
B. The Users of Needs Analysis

The users in conducting need analysis include:


1. Curriculum officers in the ministry of education
2. Teachers
3. Learners
4. Writers
5. Testing personnel
6. Staffs of institutions (Richard, 2001 : 57)
C. Procedures for Conducting Needs Analysing

 Conduction the following (Richard, 2002 : 60)


1. Questionnaire
2. Self – rating
3. Interview
4. Meetings
5. Observation
6. Collecting learner language sample
7. Task analysis
8. Case study
D. Designing the Needs Analysis

 Richard, Platt and Weber (1985 : 189 in Brown,


1995)
1. The situation in which a language will be used.
2. The objectives and purposes for which the
language is needed.
3. The types of communication that will be used.
4. The level of proficiency that will be required.
Thus, needs analysis that produces information can be
used in different ways, such as
1. It may provide the basis for the evaluation.
2. It may provide the basis for planning goals and
objectives for a future program
3. It may assist with developing tests and other
assessment procedures.
4. It can help with the selection of appropriate teaching
methods.
5. It may provide the basis for developing syllabus and
teaching material.
6. It nay provide information that can be use as a part of
course or program report.
