Introduction

 Paper-and-pencil tests refer to a general group of assessment tools in


which candidates read questions and respond in writing.

 This includes tests, such as knowledge and ability tests, and inventories,
such as personality and interest inventories.

 Paper-and-pencil tests can be used to assess job-related knowledge and


ability or skill qualifications.

 Because many candidates can be assessed at the same time with a


paper-and-pencil test, such tests are an efficient method of assessment.

Why is it required?

 To know if the job applicants really have the sound knowledge regarding
the position they are applying for.

 Suitable candidates can be identified successfully by way of such tests as


it measures person-job related attributes fairly and equally.

 Saves time as candidates who pass the test can immediately be called for
interview.

Why is it required?

 Tests are equal for all applicants and are normally taken at the same time
and location – Hence, Legal issues are reduced.

 Assessments help employees discover their potential, strengths and


challenges and in so doing, increases self-knowledge and self-
awareness.

Types of Paper and Pencil Tests

Selected Response Items:


- Binary response items (e. g., true-false).
- Multiple-choice items.
- Matching items.

Constructed Response Items:


- Fill-in-the-blank items.
- Completion and short answer items.
- Essay items.

steps.

 Step #1 :Listing topic areas/tasks


 Step #2 : Specifying the response format, number of questions, the time
limit and difficulty level
 Step #3: Writing the questions and developing the scoring guide

Step # 1 (Listing topic areas/tasks)

 Establishing and enforcing rules for behavior and policies and procedures
to maintain order among test takers.

 Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as


behavior modification and positive reinforcement.

 Preparing, administering, and grading to evaluate the test takers.

Step # 2 (Specifying the response format, number of
questions, the time limit and difficulty level)

 In case of a teacher a paper and pencil tests can go through three types
of assessment tools
 (a) multiple-choice
 (b) short answer
 (c) essay.

 Issues encountered:
How many questions are needed?
How much time to be allowed?
What should the difficulty level of the questions be?

Step # 3 (Writing the questions and developing the scoring
guide)

 All questions should tap meaningful information.

 Also, the level of language used for the questions should be appropriate
for the requirements of the position.

 The questions do not have to always be expressed verbally. Diagrams,


graphs, or tables may be incorporated into a question where useful.

 While preparing questions, answers should also be prepared and the


scoring techniques and guidelines should be pre specified.

Step # 4 (Reviewing the questions and scoring guide)

 Questions and Scoring guides should be reviewed by individuals familiar


with the position in question (school principal or an expert)

 Each question should be answerable, relevant to the job, technically and


grammatically correct and clear and understandable.

 Any symbols, words, phrases or content found to be offensive,


ambiguous, inappropriate, or misleading should be revised or replaced.

 The reviewers should also assess the appropriateness of the time limit
and difficulty level of the questions.

Factors to be considered while making a paper and pencil
test

 Respondents should be presented with CLEAR directions.


 Items should be unambiguous.
 Cues to the correct answer should be avoided.
 Grammar and vocabulary should be consistent with instruction.
 Test should strictly be based on the subject matter.
 Evaluators of the test should be predetermined and if the scoring is done
by a software, the program commands should be correctly set.

 Job analysis – understanding first what the duties of the jobs are and
developing questions that test the candidates’ knowledge about the job
they are applying for.

Shortcomings

 Require more labor (e.g., assessors, role-players, etc.) to administer than


most other methods.
 Require more time to administer
 Do not always provide validity or reliability.
 Usually, only indirectly assess intellectual skills
 Limited to knowledge-level skills, while evaluating the answers
 Test takers are prone to giving correct answers by guessing and thus
depend on blind luck

University respectively to enroll undergraduate Management Students.
