United Nation
The United Nations is an international organization whose
aims are to facilitate cooperation between countries in:-
 International law and security
 Economic and social progress
 Human rights issues
 Achievement of world peace

Founded in 1945, after World War


II, the United Nation has a total of
193 member countries

Governmental Structure Of UN
General Assembly:-
• Central organ of the United Nations
• Each country’s vote carries equal weight.
• Important questions are decided by a two-thirds
majority vote.
Security Council
• The main guardian of world
peace
• Deals only with questions of
peace and security.

Economic And Social Council(ECOSOC)


• Coordinates the major specialized agencies and
institutions
• Concerned with economic problems, such as trade,
industrialization and economic development
• Social issues, including population, children, housing,
women’s rights, racial discrimination , narcotic drugs,
crime, social welfare, children, human environment
and food.

Model United Nation
• Model United Nations is an academic simulation of
the United Nations
• Students play the roles of delegates representing a
specific country in a UN committee
• The goal of a Model UN committee is to pass
resolutions that will resolve the issues being debated
• The goal of each delegate is to have his/her country’s
interests and objectives reflected in the resolutions
• Students from all over the world discuss issues of
global importance, trying to bring solutions to them

Procedural Vocabulary
• Delegates: Representative of a nation

• Chair: The main coordinator of operations, can be


likened with Secretary General.
• Director: They generally advice both the Chair and
the Moderators and form the part of core panel

• Moderators: The second most important set of
people in line, chair and moderators work in
collaboration
• House: The committee is called the house.
• Floor: The floor is the podium, where delegates make
speeches and answer questions.
• Placard: A piece of plastic or cardboard that has the
name of the country written on it.
Every delegate has a placard, which
are used extensively during debate

• Present and voting : When a delegate is present and


wishes to vote.
• Yield: To give up time, usually to questions or
another delegate.
• Veto : The vested power of the “P5” (permanent 5)
countries to refuse approval of a draft resolution.
• Signatories : Countries that would like to see a
certain draft resolution debated.
• Bloc: A group of nations.

Documents In MUN
Position Paper:-
• Position Paper is prepared before coming to
conference.
• Paper that summarizes your nation’s position on the
issue.
Draft Resolution:-
• Created during the conference.
• Numerous delegates combine their draft working
papers and create a document that highlights all the
solutions to the problem.

Chronology And Rules
• Roll Call: Identifies which delegations are present in
the committee.
• Set The Agenda: The Chairperson will entertain
motions to open (or close) the Speaker’s List
• Formal Debate: Delegates make speeches, answer
questions, and introduce and debate resolutions
• Informal Debate: Delegates can talk freely among
themselves on the topic, forming ideas for solutions
and creating resolutions.
• Caucusing: A break in formal debate to facilitate
discussion on the topic. Most of the work at a MUN
conference is done during a caucus.

• Moderated Caucus: Allows
Delegates to debate in a less
formal setting while still
addressing the entire committee.

• Unmoderated Caucus:
Allows delegates to meet
informally to discuss and
negotiate draft resolutions

• Close of Debate: After the Speaker’s List has been
exhausted and all Caucuses completed, debate is
closed and the committee automatically moves to
voting
• Voting:
o Amendments are voted on first, Resolutions are
voted on second
o Once all Resolution related to a single topic have
been voted on, the Committee moves to the next
topic

• Stay in role
