PROBLEMS

INVOLVING
PERMUTATIONS
AND COMBINATIONS
> Both permutations and combinations are groups
or arrangements of objects. However, there is one big
difference between them. When dealing
combinations, the order of the objects is
insignificant, where in permutations the order of the
object makes difference.
PERMUTATIONS

 Permutations is the notation relates to the

act of arranging all the members of a set
into some sequence or order, or if the set
is already ordered re arranging Its
elements, a process called permutating.
A permutations is a set of objects in which
positions or order is important .
Permutations formula
 Example:
 Given (5,4)

nPr = n!/ (n-

 nPr = n! = 5! = 5.4.3.2.1=120
 (n-r)! (5-4) 1

r)!
COMBINATIONS

A combination is the choice r things

from a set of n things without
replacement and where orders does
not matter .
 A combination is a set of object in
which position in order is not
important.
COMBINATIONS
FORMULA
 Example:
 Given (4,2)
nCr= n! = 4! = 4.3.2.1 = 4.3 = 6
nCr = n!/r!(n-r)!

 r!(n-r)! 2!(4-2)! 2.1(2.1)! 2.1
