SOLAR POWER
What is Solar Power
• Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity

• It directly uses photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly uses concentrated

solar power (CSP)

• Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors

• Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the

photovoltaic effect.
The Photovoltaic Effect
How Does Solar Power Work
The History Of Solar Power
• 7th century B.C - Magnifying glass used to concentrate sun’s rays to
make fire and to burn ants.
• 3rd century B.C - Greeks and Romans use burning mirrors to light
torches for religious purposes.
• 1839 French scientist Edmond Becquerel discovers the photovoltaic
effect while experimenting with an electrolytic cell
• In 1873 Willoughby Smith discovered the photoconductivity of
selenium.
• 1876 William Grylls Adams and Richard Evans Day discover that
selenium produces electricity when exposed to light.
The Evolution of Solar Power
• Solar power came from the sun

• Glass was used to generate sun rays creates a concentrated area of

energy into a single point.

• Photovoltaic effect occurs by concentrating the sun’s rays onto

different materials.

• Bell Laboratories produced the first silicon solar cell. These solar cells
were used to power satellites.
Advantages of Solar Power
• Renewable Energy Source

• Reduces Electricity Bills

• Diverse Applications

• Low Maintenance Costs

• Technology Development
Disadvantages of Solar Power
• Cost

• Weather Dependent

• Solar Energy Storage Is Expensive

• Uses a Lot of Space

Usage of Solar Power In Everyday Life
1. Solar Electricity
• Solar energy is a major source of daily electricity.

• Persons living in homes can place PV panels on their roof or lawn to

capture the sun’s rays and covert the rays into electricity for the
house.

• In homes, solar electricity would be typically used for: lights,

computers, televisions etc.

• This is also a method of saving significantly in utility bills.

2. Solar Charging
• One of the most important appliance to persons in the 20th century
are cell phones.

• With these cell phones, the battery life of them is a daily nuisance in
the technological world.

• By having these solar powered chargers, users of cell phones can

worry less about the percentage of their cell devices.
3. Solar Transportation – Electrical Train
4. Solar Heating
Conclusion
Today you have learnt a lot of things from out presentation such as
what solar power is and the photovoltaic effect. We talked about how
solar power works and even the history and evolution of it. You even
now know things like Solar electricity, solar charging, solar
transportation and solar heating .
