INTRODUCTION
 Bio batteries generates electricity from renewable fuels (glucose, sucrose, fructose,
etc.).
 When enzymes in our bodies break down glucose, several electrons and protons
released.
 Therefore, by using enzymes to breakdown glucose, bio batteries directly receive
energy for later use.
 These batteries then store this energy for later use.
HISTORY
 The first enzyme-based bio-fuel cell was reported only in 1964 using glucose
oxidize (GOx) as the anodic catalyst and glucose as the bio-fuel.
 Even though the Bio fuel cells have been known for almost a century since the first
microbial BFC(Bio fuel cells) was demonstrated in 1912.
 Based on the work of Professor Kenji Kano (Kyoto University), a type of battery,
Sony Corporation (Japan) has developed a bio-battery with a peak power output of
50 mW, which could power a portable MP3 player.
PRESENT
 Besides bio fuel energies, presently we are using many types of energies.
 Namely wind energy , solar energies , thermal energies.
 In different technologies we use different types of batteries namely Lithium
cadmium battery, Nickel battery etc.
 Though we have many types of Batteries “BIO BATTERY” has many advantages
over other and is also 100% eco friendly
 On August 23, 2007 Sony announced the development of a bio battery that
generates electricity from carbohydrates (sugar) utilizing enzymes as its catalyst.
 Sony successfully demonstrated bio battery powered
music playback with a memory type Walkman and
passive speakers (which operate on power supplied by
the Walkman) by connecting four bio battery units in
series.

 The case of this bio battery, which is made from an

organic plastic (polylactate), is designed to be
reminiscent of a living cell.
What is a Bio Battery?
 A bio battery is known as a device in which
the substrate material, organic or inorganic, is
converted to electric energy.

 A Bio battery is an electrical energy storage

device which is used in several applications.

 This battery can be powered with the help of

organic compounds that are available in
glucose form that is used in the human
bodies.
Advantages

 Quick recharging capabilities

 Eco friendly
 Clean
 Non toxic source of energy
 Raw material available easily and plenty
 Extremely safe
 Portable and light weight compared to fuel cells0
Disadvantages

 Compared to conventional batteries, bio batteries are less likely to retain

most of their energy.

 This causes a problem when it comes to long term usage and storage of
energy for these batteries.
Applications

 Electronic devices
 Medicine
 Defense purposes
 Fuel synthesis
Conclusion

 The bio batteries are highly performing, stable, and reproducible enzymatic
fuel cell technology developed over last 5 years.

 The scaled up demonstration of bio battery powering electronic circuit.

Future Scope
 Bio – batteries have a very bright future ahead of them as test productions
and research have been increasing over recent years.

 They serve as a new form of energy that is proving to be environmentally

friendly, as well as successfully, in producing and reserving energy
