ENGLISH FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS

(2 CSU)
WEEK 1

Dr. Andri Cahyo Kumoro, ST, MT

No. 3 Lecturer Room, Level 1, Left wing of A
Building
Department of Chemical Engineering
Faculty of Engineering-Diponegoro University
ENGLISH FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS
CLASS CONTRACT

 Attendance  75 % or 2 off opportunities

 Marking Components: 40% UTS, 40 % UAS
and 20% Assignment (group& Individual)
 Appeal on final mark only be entertained ±
7 days after judicium.
 No tolerance for violation against
University and National Academic
Regulations,
Expected learning outcomes (ELOs):

 Enhance students’ speaking skills

 Develop students’ writing skills
 Expose students to real world communication
 Enable students to communicate effectively with the
professionals in their own specializations and others
 Enable students to carry out activities and tasks that
would make their study of the subject more effective
Engineers are highly skilled and knowledgeable people;

yet communicating their expertise in English often proves to

be a deeply frustrating experience that prevents both
students and workers from:

publishing in journals
participating in conferences
communicating effectively with fellow professionals
English is the dominant language of science and technology
and an indispensable part in an engineer’s professional
training

English is used in academic career and professional life

Engineering students need to acquire communication skills

along with technical skills, to facilitate career success and
community engagement

Essential communication skills include problem solving,

conflict resolution, teamwork, and awareness of social
justice, ethics and sustainability
Communicative Competence:
 Teamwork
 Professional writing skills for example
 Ability to research, write and format basic research
reports
 Develop formal oral presentation skills

It is important to prepare students for both academic success

and the workplace

“43 percent of engineers cannot write correct English and

lack accuracy in English grammar. It is further understood
from the report that 25-35 per cent of engineers are unable
to comprehend effectively written and spoken discourses in
English, which include day-to-day conversations, academic
lectures and texts.”
A large majority of the engineering students lack analytical
thinking skills, debating and public speaking skills it affects
their problem solving abilities and proficiency in using the
language.

With globalization and the ever-increasing international

exchanges, there has been a remarkable gap between the
professional competencies and the corresponding
communication competencies.
SELF-INTRODUCTION

 Your full name and nick name

 Your place of origin and family information
 Your current stay and permanent stay
 Your previous education
 Your previous achievements
 Why do you choose chemical engineering
 Your expectation after finish your study
Chemical Engineers vs Chemists

• Chemists
– Identify potential solutions
Air CO2 , H2O

Normal Desired Temperature

CeO2

CO, NOX, etc

Temperature Too High

• Chemical Engineers
– For given engine size, fuel type, rate of fuel/air flow… etc, how much of the
fuel goes to CO2 and H2O and how much of it goes to CO and NOX?
– How is the best design parameters for a F150?

The reward can be

different as well… 9
What are the Career Paths for Chemical Engineers?

Research Pharmaceutical Firms

Institutions/Universities

Hospitals
Chemical Chemical
Manufacturers Engineers
Petroleum
Food Research and Development Companies
Manufacturers Consultant
Process/Project Engineer
Government
Sales/Marketing
Consumer Agencies
Products Firms

Consulting Firms
Nuclear Plants (Engineering/ Environmental / Financial)
What Should Chemical Engineers Learn???
Air CO2 , H2O

Normal Desired Temperature

CeO2

CO, NOX, etc

Temperature Too High

• What it takes to become a chemical engineer

– High School
• Chemistry, Physics, Math, Biology and Computer Science
– College/University “Instead of weekend bar-
• Fluid/solid mechanics crawlers, Grad schools and
• Reaction Engineering
companies actually look for
• Heat and mass transfer
thinkers and problem
• etc
solvers.”
Time Management
The Easy yet Difficult Task
“Managing time is the easiest type of management . You do not
have to say nice things to your teammates and be careful not to
hurt them because they are just hours or minutes. Of course you
just need to make to make sure that you are not the one that
prevents the execution of the plan”

It is all about being

proactive…
Studying Efficiency 1:
Fully Utilize In-Class Time
Take notes
Not to doze off

Equations
– Identify the known and
unknowns (how can I use this Actively follow the
equation)
– Identify the units of each instructor’s thoughts
parameter
– Identify the trends of the
variables
Studying Efficiency 2:
Fully Utilize Off-Class Time
• Most of the study is done
off - class
– Make a big difference on
grades
• Go – over lecture notes
– Do not just read
– Try the best to remember
what you learn
– Master them like you are to
teach the class
Develop Engineering Common Sense:
Velocity of a motor vehicle = 650 mph ???
Working Group Projects

Group projects can be

• You cannot fire your lame teammates, nor can you cut
their salary.
• You can try not to let them jeopardize your GPA by
doing/improving some/all of their work. In this case you
will probably learn more.
