QUADRATIC FORMULA
DISCRIMINANT
WHY USE THE QUADRATIC FORMULA?
The quadratic formula allows you to solve any quadratic equation, even if you
cannot factor it.
An important piece of the quadratic formula is what’s
under the radical: 𝒃𝟐 – 4ac
This piece is called the discriminant. 𝑫 = 𝒃𝟐 −𝟒𝒂𝒄
2𝑥 2 + 5 = 3x 𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
3x

_____________ 𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝟖𝒙 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒔.
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟓 = 𝟎
Step 2: Identify
the value of a, b
and c.
𝒂 = 𝟏 𝒃 = −𝟒 𝒄 = 𝟓
Step 3: Substitute
these values to
D= 𝒃𝟐 – 4ac. 𝑫 = 𝒃𝟐 −𝟒𝒂𝒄
𝑫 = (−𝟒)𝟐 − 𝟒(𝟏)(𝟓)
𝑫 = 𝟏𝟔 − 𝟐𝟎
𝑫 = −𝟒
Example 1
