Introduction
One of the most distinguished 20th
century architects and theorists
from the Middle East, Rifat Chadirji,
the father of architecture in Iraq, is

Rifat Chadirji (also known as Rifa'at Al
Chaderchi)was born on December 6,
1926 in Baghdad, is an Iraqi architect,
photographer, author and activist.

Biography
“Rifat Chadirji is one of the most
prominent architects in the Arab

Rifat Chadirji is an architect who

Work
Rifat first worked in 1952, in what
he called “architectural
experiments”. His early works were
primarily reconstructions of old
SINGLE
buildings, his famous “Monument
of Unknown Soldier” reveals the
TEAM
inspiration of his designs.

He would continue to use ancient
Iraqi motifs in his building designs.
“People still speak about him and his work because he always had a
style of his own,” said Sharara
Rifat Chadirji's architecture is inspired by the characteristics of regional
Iraqi architecture. He worked as an architect, consualler & served in jail
for 2 years.
Although Rifat designed many residences, he is most noted for his
public works, including both buildings and monuments.

Legacy
Rifat was presented Aga Khan
Award for Architecture, which he
received in 1986.
In 2017, the Rifat Chadirji Prize was
SINGLE
created to recognize local architects
who are involved in rebuilding parts
TEAM
of Iraq that had been destroyed. The
prize isSLIDE
awarded under the umbrella
of the Tamayouz Award for
Excellence.
