Abstract
 The present day air conditioning system in automobile uses
“Vapour Compression Refrigeration System” (VCRS) which
absorbs and removes heat from the interior of the vehicle.
The system utilizes power from the engine to run the
compressor of the refrigerant system. The loss of power of
the engine can be covered by using another refrigeration
system i.e. a “Vapour Absorption Refrigeration
system”(VAR). In a VAR system, a physiochemical process
replaces the mechanical process of the VCR System by
using energy in the form of heat rather than mechanical
work. It enhances the vehicle performance , reduces noise,
maintenance becomes easier, and highly reliable.
Need for Air conditioning
 The load factors are constantly and rapidly
changing.
 As the vehicle moves faster there is greater
chance for Infiltration and heat transfer
between the outside air & the car surface
 Air pollution
Available Methods
 Vapour Compression Refrigeration system
(VCRS)
 Vapour Absorption Refrigeration
System(VARS)
 Magnetic refrigeration
Drawbacks in VCR System
 The refrigerants are mainly hydrocarbons like
HCFCs and HFCs, which are not environmental
friendly, resulting in undesirable changes in the
atmosphere and environment like global warming,
ozone layer depletion, etc.
 There is a great impact on the running cost of a
vehicle due to increasing cost of fuel. The A/C
system adds nearly 35 % extra cost in fuel
expenses.
Components in the VAR system
 ABSORBER:
The absorber would be an approximately 200 mm
X200 mm X 100 mm container which would be
properly insulated to prevent the transfer of heat
from the surrounding into thesystem.
 PUMP:
 40 watt , maximum head 2.4 meter, volume flow rate
2000 lit/hr.
•Generator:
The generator is used to vaporise the ammonia
from the solution so it can be used for cooling
purposes.

 THROTTLING DEVICE
To regulate the flow of refrigerant

 CONDENSOR:
A system where heat transfer takes place
A simple VAR System
COMPARISON
VCR SYSTEM VAR SYSTEM
 COP IS 0.64  COP IS 1.2 TO 1.5
 COMPRESSOR IS NOT  COMPRESSOR IS
REQUIRED REQUIRED
 REFRIGERANT IS ECO  REFRIGERANT IS NOT
FRIENDLY ECO FRIENDLY
 LOW IN COST  COST IS HIGH
 MAINTENACE IS NOT  MAINTENANCE IS
REQUIRED REQUIRED
Advantages
 Regular maintenance is not required
 Refrigerant is eco friendly
 The overall efficiency of the vehicle can be
improved
 Installation cost is low
DRAWBACKS
 COP is low compared to VCR system.
 Placing the setup in the confined space is a difficulty
 Difficult to detect refrigerant if leakage occurs
Conclusion
 For providing cabin cooling for an automobile using
engine exhaust, the vapour absorption system can be
used.
 The COP of this system varies from 0.3113 to 0.3583
 The heat load on the generator can be easily met by
using the engine exhaust.
 Though the COP of the system is less but since the
exhaust gases are used as input, it is not a matter of
concern.
