IMPROving classroom instruction
Case #1
During my daily supervision of classes, I entered
my Grade 8 class, a class of 13 + year olds. The
teacher was teaching decimals in Mathematics.
Her introduction was “to have students open
their text books to a particular page with
examples of decimal operations.”
She then proceeded to let pupils state how
several sums should be worked out.
She did all the writing. Her questioning
technique was such that there were many
leading questions.
One error made was when the teacher
requested that pupils repeat that the decimal
point shifted. Some pupils to the rear of the
classroom were never questioned. If you were
the principal, what would you do?

Case #2
About 10:00 a.m. one Wednesday I went to
supervise a Grade Eight class. The teacher (one
with over twenty years of experience) looked
quite prepared and confident as the lesson plan
was handed over to me. The teacher had chosen
not to discuss the lesson plan with me before
the lesson.

Case #1
Miss X teaches at a rural infant school. This
novice teacher is very irresponsible,
disorganized and unprofessional in executing
her duties. She experiences difficulties in
managing her class of 35 students. Miss X is
quite knowledgeable of how to prepare lesson
plans and records of work. Sometimes her
daily plans and records of work are not up to
date.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Case #2
During the period September 2003 to December
2003 I acted as principal of the school. During
the second week of the term a teacher reported
that her class had been missing the first periods
on mornings, because the teacher responsible for
the subject was often late.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Case #1
As per DO 19, s. 2008, no fees shall be collected
from school children enrolling in pre-school up
to Grade IV, during the enrolment period and at
any time during the school year. You heard that
one of your teacher is collecting Php 100.00
from his pupils for the curtains and room
decorations. What will you do?
