IMPORTANCE OF CARE

- Providing a workplace that offers caring, encouragement,

and support can be highly engaging.
- Engaged employees are more likely to stay with the
organization, perform 20% better than their colleagues,
and act as advocates of the organization
- A 1% increase in employee engagement is associated
with a 4% decrease in the total number of accidents per
FTE
HOW TO SHOW CARE IN THE WORKPLACE

According to Sam Ashe-Edmunds:

1. Extra Effort
2. Measure Twice, Cut Once
3. Pay Attention to Routine Tasks
4. Soliciting Advice
What is a Dilemma?
WHICH CAME FIRST?
Dilemma is a situation in which a choice has to
be made between two or more alternatives which
are equally disfavored or favored.
How to handle dilemmas?
The way to handle dilemmas is to
encourage people to share and speak up
about it and for the others to listen to
them and support them. Once they do,
we should also remind ourselves to do the
same.
WE HELP EACH OTHER
RESOLVE THESE DILEMMAS
THROUGH EFFECTIVE
CONVERSATION.
Conversation Objectives:
* To UNDERSTAND the presence of dilemma

* To RECOGNISE the reason for the dilemma

* To MAKE ACTION, that is, either to do the right thing or

ask for help and support

* To FEEL supported, cared for and in return to feel safer to make the right choice

* To KNOW that you are not alone when you need to make a difference
SHARING
• What are your dilemmas?
• What will you now do when faced with dilemmas?
• How will you encourage people to speak about dilemmas?
A situation involving
exposure to danger.

WHAT IS RISK NORMALIZATION ?

The process of bringing or
returning something to a
normal condition or state.
WHAT IS RISK NORMALIZATION ?
• The gradual process through which unacceptable practice or
standards become acceptable.
• As the unacceptable behavior is repeated without catastrophic
results, it becomes the social norm for the organization
• Everyone gets used to the risk, considers it a normal part of
the workplace, and tends to forget to develop, implement or
monitor the controls to manage it.
WHAT IS RISK NORMALIZATION ?
• A mental process which allows you to turn on your gas
appliance or drive your car without a paralysing fear of your
house blowing up or of being in an accident

• It is not necessarily a bad thing

• It is what allows us to get out of bed each morning and carry

on with our day
KNOWING VS. DOING
Reasons for not doing anything Reasons for doing something
• Someone else must have reported it, it’s • If it doesn’t look OK, it may not be
been like that for ages
• It’s up to all of us to act
• It’s not up to me
• I can help my workmates by getting this
• It must be ok as everyone else seems to fixed
think so
• It could prevent a future incident
• It would mean more work for someone
• We can make a safer workplace to be
• I might look stupid if I raise that as a proud of
problem
EXAMPLES:
 Don’t assume it’s right!
 Make sure any reported defects by

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS
PICTURE?
• The electrical outlet has too
many cords plugged into it.

• An overloaded outlet can build

up dangerous heat that can
ignite a fire.

• If this looks familiar, talk to your

supervisor about having
additional circuits and outlets
installed.
• The work gloves have holes in
the fingers.

• These gloves no longer provide

adequate protection and need
to be replaced.

• PPE needs to be in good shape

in order to protect you.
• Did you see the hammer and C-
clamp on the ladder?

• Tools that are not put away

properly pose a serious falling
hazard.

• Putting everything in its place

will significantly reduce hazards
that can cause slips, trips and
falls, injuries and fires.
SHARING
Tell us about a certain risk that has been normalized in
your workplace and what action did you took to help avoid
future accidents.
Summary
• Care in the workplace has a positive impact on
employee engagement

• WE HELP EACH OTHER RESOLVE THE DILEMMAS

THROUGH EFFECTIVE CONVERSATION.

• It is important to understand and identify the risks

that are normalized so we can change them.
