prevention of problems before illness occur

Positive motivation

PURPOSE: Assist nurses in understanding the major

determinants of health behaviors as a basis for behavioral
counseling to promote healthy lifestyle
MAJOR CONCEPTS OF PENDER’S HEALTH
PROMOTION MODEL
1. Individuals seek to actively regulate their own behavior.

2. Individuals are complex beings, and by interacting with the environment, they
transform the environment and allow the environment to change them
psychologically and socially.

3. Healthcare providers are a part of the interpersonal environment and have a

significant influence on individuals throughout their lifetime.

4. Motivation to alter interactions with the environment is essential to change

behavior
INTERRELATEDNESS
• PATIENT – The boy’s decisions regarding his health is
influenced by the lifestyle choices of his parents and
the suggestions of the nurse.

• NURSE – The nurse educates the boy and his parents

on the importance of nutrition
and exercise in order to
prevent the high risk of diabetes
which runs in the family, as well
as other risk factors associated
with obesity.
HEALTH – Health focuses on the family and the community. It is shaped by many different
factors. Health has a different meaning to everyone. The family didn’t think they were
doing anything wrong, because they were not educated on childhood obesity. They
were unaware of their unhealthy habits, and they now know they need to make
changes.

ENVIRONMENT – The environment has an influence on a person’s

regulation of health. Pender describes the environment and the individual
to have a reciprocal relationship. The environment is influenced by the
population, but the environment also has an influence on the individual. People can
positively mold the environment to promote healthy living. The boy’s idea of health was
influenced by the environment his parents created around his. The nurse, through an
intervention with his parents, is positively changing the boy’s environment and his idea of
health.
