CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Reading is an interactive process based on two ways
(Grabe & Stoller, 2011)

Reading is an extraordinary achievement that must

be mastered in learning English (McNamara, 2007)

Plaut (2009) claimed that reading is a very complex

activity.

In fact, many of students still have a problems in

understanding the reading text (Ghazo, 2015)
 PREVIOUS STUDY

Clark (2003) conducted the study of

investigating the impact of using
Reciprocal Teaching model and
exploring the development of the
reading comprehension skills.

Ratanakul (1998) conducted a

comparative study to examine the
differences between reciprocal
teaching and the translation
technique in Thailand.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MY STUDY AND THE
PREVIOUS STUDY
 In Indonesia, it is just a few of researchers that have directly compared the improvement of
reciprocal strategy especially regarding teaching reading comprehension in university level
because most of them conducting the research in junior high school and senior high school
level.

 Most of them using qualitative design as their research methodology. Therefore, in this study,
the researcher use quantitative design as the research methodology.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
1. Does the use of reciprocal teaching strategy can improve students’ reading
comprehension for undergraduate students in 2nd semester at University of
Muhammadiyah Malang?

THE PURPOSE OF STUDY

1. The purpose of the study is to find out whether or not reciprocal teaching strategy
gives a significant improvement in reading comprehension for undergraduate students
in 2nd semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

 Scope:
The strategy used in this study is a reciprocal teaching strategy which is focused on reading
comprehension for undergraduate students in 2nd semester at University of Muhammadiyah
Malang.
 Limitation:
This research only conducted for undergraduate students in 2nd semester at University of
Muhammadiyah Malang.

Reciprocal Teaching Strategy

THE PHASE OF RECIPROCAL TEACHING STRATEGY
The Implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy
Klingner (2007) explains how the implementation of reciprocal teaching strategy is in reading
comprehension as follow:

Predicting

Questioning

Clarifying

Summarizing
THE ADVANTAGES OF RECIPROCAL TEACHING STRATEGY
 Reciprocal teaching strategy could help the students to improve reading skill and comprehend
reading text easier.
 Reciprocal teaching strategy could motivate the students to get involved and participate in the
discussion or.
 Reciprocal teaching strategy motivated the students to enhance their reading interest.
 Reciprocal teaching procedure helps the students to improve their English ability.
THE DISADVANTAGES OF RECIPROCAL TEACHING STRATEGY
 Reciprocal teaching procedure involves four strategies consists of predicting, clarifying,
questioning, and summarizing, it may cause confusion for the students to finish the task especially
for those who lack interest in learning English.
 There were too many activities in just comprehended a text or even a paragraph; and there was
a problem to catch a summary of every paragraph presented by the other groups.

Experimental
RESEARCH VARIABLES
 The dependent variable of this study is students’ ability in reading comprehension
that will be measured by reading test.
 The independent variable of this study is using a reciprocal teaching strategy to
improve students’ reading comprehension.
RESEARCH SETTING, POPULATION AND SAMPLE
 This research was conducted in University of Muhammadiyah Malang which was
located at Jalan Raya Tlogomas No. 246, Tlogomas, Lowokwaru, Babatan,
Tegalgondo, Karangploso, Malang City, East Java.
 The total population of undergraduate students in 2nd semester at University of
Muhammadiyah Malang is 125 students.
The sample of the research only two classes and each class consists of 25 students.
The total number of sample is 50 students. The sample are class A as the
experimental group and class B as the control group.
DATA COLLECTION

Pre-Test Treatment Post-Test

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
 Test  Using multiple choice item and essay

DATA ANALYSIS
 After collecting the data, pre-test, and post-test from the experimental group and control
group, then the researcher measured the score differences from pre-test and post-test of
experimental group and control group by the statistical calculation.
 The researcher used the independent sample t-test, it is used to measure the mean score
between two groups.
 SPSS 22 one-way ANOVA was used to compare the mean of both groups and to find out
whether the strategy work best which can improve the students’ reading comprehension or
not.
