Acute prescribing
Understanding the diseases
• Homoeopathy believes that it is not the part, or organ
or tissues only which are diseased. It is the man as a
unit who is sick. ‘

•There are no diseases, only sick patients.’

• Illness is regarded by Homoeopathy as general (i.e.
pertaining to the patient as a whole). It denies the
exclusive possibility of a ‘local’ disease or even ‘local’
treatment.
Acute prescrabing
Understanding the diseases
• Homeopathy regards disease as an expression of the
‘whole’ organism; symptoms as representation of the
totality of patient’s response to a given morbific
stimulus (insult), though the symptoms may be in
the localized organs.
• “Allopathy attempts to treat ‘The disease that
the patient has”, whereas homoeopathy
attempts to treat ‘ The patient that has the
disease.”
The disease – acute and chronic - is an expression of
“fight to maintain homoeostasis.”
Undestanding disease
• Patient’s symptoms are

 reaction of the organism to the morbific stimulus.

 symptoms, however painful and undesirable they may be, are

regarded as usefully adaptive phenomena,

 they attempt to restore health - organism ’ s protective and

defensive mechanism produses them.

“Disease has no existence of its own; there are only

diseased people”.
Common misconceptions about
Homeopathy
 Homeopathy is based on only removal of
symptoms

 Homeopathy is a slow process

 Homeopathy can not cure serious or

emergency diseases.

 Homeopaths take a long time and the cure is

probably due to psychotherapy
Homeopathy in epidemics
 The Use of Homeopathic medicines in the 1918
Influenza Epidemic. (Julian Winston's book "Faces of
Homeopathy“)
 Homeopathy was used by homeopathic physicians in USA
to treat patients during 1918-1919 influenza epidemic.
555 000 000 infected / 50 – 100 000 000 dead
In most cases one or two homeopathic medicines were
needed. These are known as the “genus epidemicus” in
an epidemic and become known through the careful
observation of a number of influenza cases.
 In the 1918 epidemic Gelsemium and Bryonia were most
commonly indicated according to the following extracts.
Journal of the American Institute of
Homeopathy; 1921
W.A. Dewey MD. published a paper
“Homeopathy in Influenza – A Chorus of
Fifty in Harmony”.
 The following extracts are from this paper.
• In Philadelphia 26,795 cases of influenza treated by
homeopathic physicians had a mortality rate of 1.05%
compared with the conventional mortality rate of 30%.
• In Connecticut 30
physicians reported 6,602
cases with 55 deaths, (<1%).
 The Use of Homeopathic medicines in the 1918 Influenza
Epidemic

• Dr Roberts, in Connecticut reported 81 cases in the
transport service all treated with homeopathic treatment
and all recovered.

• In a factory in Chicago, Dr Wieland reported influenza in

8000 workers with one death.
All were treated with Gelsemium. He reports no aspirin was
used and no vaccines.

 Winston, J “ The Faces of Homeopathy”;

The Use of Homeopathic medicines in the 1918
Influenza Epidemic
 Dr Williams in Rhode Island reported
no losses from influenza and a 2.1%
loss in those that developed
pneumonia.
 He observed that doctors using
aspirin as the main treatment were
having a 60% mortality in those
patients that developed pneumonia.

 The Use of Homeopathic medicines in the 1918
Influenza Epidemic

• Dr Sappington reports that from 1500 influenza
cases recorded by the Homeopathic Medical Society of
the District of Columbia only 15 died. Recoveries in the
National Homeopathic Hospital was 100%

• In Ohio, Dr McCann treated 1000 cases of influenza

and had no losses. He says all credit must be given to
homeopathy.

Aphorism 71
As it is now no longer a matter of doubt that the diseases of mankind
consist merely of groups of certain symptoms, and may be annihilated
and transformed into health by medicinal substances, but only by such
as are capable of artificially producing similar morbid symptoms (and
such is the process in all genuine cures), hence the operation of
curing is comprised in the three following points: I. How is
the physician to ascertain what is necessary to be known
in order to cure the disease? II. How is he to gain a
knowledge of the instruments adapted for the cure of
the natural disease, the pathogenetic powers of the
medicines? III. What is the most suitable method of
employing these artificial morbific agents (medicines) for
the cure of natural disease?
Aphorism 72
With respect to the first point, the following will serve as
a general preliminary view. The disease to which man is
liable are either rapid morbid processes of the
abnormally deranged vital force, which have a
tendency to finish their course more or less quickly, but
always in a moderate time – these are termed acute
diseases; – or they are diseases of such a character
that, with small, often imperceptible beginnings,
dynamically derange the living organism, each in its
own peculiar manner, and cause it gradually to deviate
from the healthy condition, in such a way that the
automatic life energy, called vital force, whose office is
to preserve the health, only opposes to them […]
Hahnemann Organon of Medicine Aphorism 6
The unprejudiced observer, even the most sharp-
witted one-knowing the nullity of supersensible
speculations which are not born out in experience-
perceives nothing in each single case of disease other
than the alterations in the condition of the body and
soul, disease signs & symptoms, which are outwardly
discernible through the senses i.e. the unprejudiced
observer only perceives the deviations which are:
1. felt by the patient himself
2. perceived by those around him and
3. observed by the physician.

All these perceptible signs represent the disease in its

entire extent, that is, together they form the true and
only conceivable gestalt of the disease.
Aphorism 3

If the physician clearly perceives what is to be

cured in diseases, that is to say, in every
individual case of disease (knowledge of
disease, indication),
------------------------------------------------------------
Many people get confused – they study the
individual, but not the disease

DON’T study the person excluding his

disease state.
To treat or cure a Patient
Dr. Hahnemann, ORGANON
Aphorism 1
The Physicians high and only mission is to
restore the sick to health, to cure as it is termed

• i.e. understand the journey of disease, from

where the patient has fallen sick and travelled
to his present state
Dr.Prafull Vijaykar
 Every cell or living thing has a survival instinct
 To survive a cell has to defend itself against any
kind of hostile stimulus
 The primary reaction of any cell is to Defend
 Dr. Vijayakar defines them as Defence of a
human being to any stimuli or actions.
 How a human being defends and reacts is what
decides their defense.
 Miasms have been equated to pathology at the
cellular level.

TREATMENT OF ACUTE DISEASES:
 Beginning : - easy or misleadingly easy
 Continuation : Fast, slow and different
combinations of them
 Outcome:
 Recovery
 In a healthy person we expect 100 % coming
back to norm
 No recovery???
100 % is what we all would like to have, but …
Dr. Manish Bhatia
… a medicine does not become a ‘simillimum’
for a case just because the symptoms match.
A medicine will assist in curing a case only if –
• The symptoms match.
• The potency matches the intensity of the
presentation and the totality of the case….
• The medicine is repeated appropriately.
