Preparation of Table of

Specification
What should be tested?
What topics were discussed and for
how long?
What type of items will you use?
How long will the students take the
test?
How many items/points should be
used given the amount of time
available?
Table of Specifications (TOS)

is a plan prepared by a classroom

teacher as a basis for test
construction especially a periodic
test.
Steps in Preparing Table of Specification

1. Make a content outline of the subject

matter, which has been taught after a
definite period of time.

2. Determine the objectives, specific

knowledge or skills to be tested.
3. Find the number of class sessions spent
for each subject matter, unit, chapter, etc.,
taught and the total number of sessions.
4. Divide the number of class sessions per
subject matter by the total no. of sessions to
decide on the no. of test items to be
constructed.
5. Find out the total number of items for each
subject matter.
6. Distribute the number of items.

7. Construct the test items by observing the

principles of test construction.
Table of Specification Formulas
To get the number of items per content
a. Divide the no. of class days per content by
the total no. of days for the grading period.
b. Multiply the quotient in letter(a) by the total
no. of test items.
Ex. TOPIC :Multiplication of Whole Nos. and its
properties - 7 days
Total no. of Days for the grading period = 45
a. 7/45 = 0.15555 or 0.16
Total no. of items = 40
b. 0.16 x 40 = 6.4 - no. of items for the topic
