 In this concept the tilting vice is very useful in

drilling machine, milling machines, slotting

machines and for grinding machines etc..,

 This is the small machine attachments which

we have designed specially for all machine.

 By this attachment we can do lot of

operation in different machine
• Some complicated components needs differed type
of drilling holes and milling operation.

• So designing the separate fixture for holding in

such machines is much cost.

• So this tilting vice attachments shows the most

important in machines.

• Vices usually have one fixed jaw and another,

parallel, jaw which is moved towards or away from the
fixed jaw by the screw.
INTRODUCTION

This project namely “TILTING VICE” is designed

and fabricated by us is used for Angular milling,
Angular drilling etc.,
HOLDING DEVICE

Vice
T-bolt and clamps
Drill press vice
Step block
V-block
Angle plate
Drill jigs
WORK HOLDING DEVICE
The main purpose of a work holder, or clamping device,
is to securely hold the position of the part against the locators
through the machining cycle. To do this, the clamp used must
meet the following conditions:
The clamp must be strong enough to hold the part and to
resist movement.
The clamp must not damage or deform the part.
The clamp should be fast-acting and allow rapid loading
and unloading of parts.
To use the proper clamp for each job, the tool designer
must know and understand the basic principles of clamping,
as well as the devices commonly used to hold the work.
TYPES OF PIPE VICE:

Machine vice
Bench vice
Pneumatic vice
Hydraulic vice.

PRODUCTIVITY

Clamping time can be minimized by using

spanners, since we commonly use spanners
for tightening and loosening, as it provide
better grip.
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

This Tilting vice has six parts, which are

assembled with the help of weld.The parts are,
1. Base
2.Tilting base
3.Tilting arrester
4. Fixed jaw
5. Movable jaw
6. Screw rod
7.Hinged edge
TILTING VICE COMPONENTS
This method of holding is used to hold the work pieces
which are perpendicular to each other.
Our clamp has seven main parts :
1. Base : It almost holds all parts of the
clamp.
2. Fixed jaw : It is located on the base and it is
fixed.
3. Screw rod : Used for adjusting the workpiece
to
place rigidly on the vice.
4. Guide block : This block provides support to the
screw rod.
5. Movable jaw :It can move firmly to hold the
workpiece.
.
6.Tilting base : Tilting base created various
angle we can change the various angle.

7.Position pin: With the help of position pin

we can set the tilting base
8.Hinged eye bolt: This bolt welded at the base
plate.
OPERATIONS INVOLVED

Facing (flat surface)

Drilling
Gas cutting (flat plate)
Shaping
Welding
Riveting
Thread cutting
WORKING PRINCIPLE

• In this projects have fixed jaw and movable jaw.

• The jaws are holding the work.
• Base plate is used to hold the vice in milling or drilling
machine.
• Swivel arrangement is used to swiveling different angles
and sides of the vice.
• Position pins is used for arresting the movement of the
vice during machining.
• Then job is holed tightly through the help of screw rod
arrangement which is clearly shown as in the below block
diagram.
2. DESIGN CALCULATION
SCREW DESIGN 0F M20
Size of the screw (Bolt) =M20
Pitch =2.5 mm (from pg –coarse series table1)
For coarse thread dc =0.84 x d
=0.84 x 20
Dc=16.8mm
Stress area =245mm2

14
Initial tension in bolt p 1=2860d

=2860 x 20 =57200N

But this p 1=π x dc 2 x f1 /4

Tensile stress f1=p 1 x 4/ (π x dc2)

=57200 x4 (π x 16.82)

f1=258.04N/mm2
As the pin is double shear
P1=2 x π x dc2 2 x f1/4

f1= 57200 X 4 (2 X π X 1682)

=128.71mm2
15
Shear stress
As the pin is double shear

P = 2 x π dc 2 x fs/4

Shear stress =Load/ area

=57200 x 4/ (π x 202)

=91.03N /mm2

Tensile force>Shear force

258.04> 91.03

Therefore design is safe. 16

DESIGN OF CLAMPING FORCE
For our vice we assume,

Push applied to handle (Fn) =100 N

Pitch radius (R) = 10.212 mm (from P.S.G pg: 5.58)

Helix angle of thread Ө = 60

Friction angle of thread Φ = 17

Length of handle L = 150 mm

Force developed in screw :

Fs = Fn * L / R * TAN (φ +Ө)
Fs = 1000 *150 /10.212*tan ( 17 + 60 )
Fs = 1356.45N
ADVANTAGES

It is used for angular drilling,angular milling .

Clamping force should be equally distributed
to all the workpieces.
Its operation and maintenance is very simple.
It is compact and portable.
It is simple and rigid in construction.
Manufacturing cost is lesser than other
machine vice.
It Provides better clamping force on the job.
