Mike Mangini's Musical Career

Michael Mangini was born in April 18th of 1963 (59 years old) and started playing drums when he
was only 2 and a half years old. He used to practice two to four hour a day by the time he was nine, as
well he already was mimicking Buddy Rich performances at this age. After his graduation he put aside
his musical studies, because he wanted to get a academic major in computer science, after his
graduation he started programming software for the patriot missile program and working on studies
which search for the link between the human and brain body, he also went back with his music career,
and it was at this point that he started to been known by his virtuous drums techniques.
In 1991, he began to work for the thrash metal band Annihilator, recording the studio album "Set the
World on Fire", he went on tour and supported the band until 1994, then Mike asked to play for
Extreme, replacing the original drummer Paul Geary, in Extreme Mangini recorded several songs for
their upcoming album "Waiting in the Punchline" in 1995, in 1996 the band broke up. After being on
Extreme he was informed that the famous guitarist Steve Vai was looking for a drummer to play in his
live set, Michael successful entered Steve Vai's band and became a worthy and valuable highly rated
drummer in the band live set, recording four live albums with Steve Vai.
In the next years he worked with two former members of Extreme in a band called Tribe of Judah
and also a full length album with Annihilator, his second with the band, titled "All for You". At the end of
2010, Mike auditioned to replace Mike Portnoy as the drummer of the progressive metal band Dream
Theater. On Friday April 29, 2011, Dream Theater officially announced that Mike Mangini was to be
their new drummer. He has since recorded A Dramatic Turn of Events with the group.

● Bare hands (no sticks) in 60 seconds, which he earned by executing 1,138 single stroke notes in
April 2002.

● Match grip single strokes in 60 seconds, executing 1,247 notes at the 2005 Summer NAMM in
Indianapolis, IN. Mike already was the 1st person in history to break 1,200 notes when he played
1,203 single notes at the 2005 Winter NAMM Session.

● Traditional Grip which he earned by executing 1,126 single strokes in 60 seconds in 2003, stood
for five years before falling to Matt Smith (1,132) in 2008.

● Single Stroke Foot record playing 13,222 hits in 15 minutes and 4,555 hits in five minutes, records
that stood for two years before falling to Mike "Machine" Mallais (13,309/4,595) in 2007.
