1.Tension test on mild and TMTsteel
3

•Mild steel & TMT barsarecommonlyusedasreinforcement in structures to with standtensile stresses;so it

is necessaryto test for tensile strengthof mild steel bars.
•Reference:-I.S. 1608-Metallic material tensiletesting

•If the applied load is smallenough, the deformation of anysolid bodyisentirely

elastic.

•However,if the load is too large, the material canbedeformedpermanently. The initial part of the tension
curvewhich is recoverableimmediatelyafter unloading is termedaselastic andthe rest of the curvewhich
representsthe mannerin which solid undergoesplastic deformation is termedplastic.

•Thestressbelow which the deformations essentially entirely elastic is known as

the yield strengthofmaterial.

1.Tension test on mild and TMTsteel
4

•For material which do not possesawell define yield point, for steel and most metals, a0.2%
offset is used to define the yield stress.Astrain value of 0.002 is selected and aline parallel to
the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve is constructed. The intersection of this line with the
stress-strain curve defines the value of the yieldstress.
•Rate of loading 200KN/min for mild &TMT

2.Torsion test on mildsteel.
6

•Reference:-I.S. 1717: method ofsimple

torsion test

•Torsion occurs when any shaft is

subjected to atorque.
•This is true whether the shaft is
rotating or stationary. The torque
makes the shaft twist and one end rotates
relative to the other inducing shear stress on
anycross section.
•Failure might occur due to shear alone or
because the shear is come by stretching or
bending.

Dept.of Civil Engineering,DIT,Pimpri,Pune 7

2.Torsion test on mildsteel.
7

• Element ‘a ‘is in pure shear.(facing ll toaxis)

• Element ‘c’ is subjected to atensile stress on two faces
and compressive stress on the other two. (element 45⁰
to shaftaxis)
• Ductile materials generally fail in shear.
• Brittle materials are weaker in tension than
shear.
• When subjected to torsion, a ductile specimen
breaks along a plane of maximum shear, i.e., a
plane perpendicular to the shaft axis. ex. mild
steel,aluminium
When subjected to torsion, abrittle specimen breaks
along planes perpendicular to the direction in
which tension is amaximum, i.e., along surfaces at
45⁰ to the shaftaxis.

2.Torsion test on mildsteel.
8

•Finally all the readings of torque applied and angle of twist

recorded and plot the graph of torque versus angle of twist.
(T Vs θ).
•Calculate the value of modulus of rigidity G from graph.
T = Gθ
J L

3.Impact test on mild steel, aluminium, brass.
9
•Reference:-I.S. 1598 – for Izodimpact test I.S. 1727 – for Charpy impacttest

•Toughnessis an important property for components working under impact or shock loads such
asrails, axles etc.

•In this test, a specially designed notched specimenis fractured byasingle blow
ofhammer.

•Notch on specimengivesrise to triaxial conditions.

•Impact load is produced by a swinging of an impact weight W (hammer) from a height h.
Release of the weight from the height h swings the weight through the arc of a circle, which
strikesthespecimento fractureatthe notch.

•Energyused canbe measuredfrom the scale given indicated bypointer.

•For Izod test -Maximum energyis 164J
•For charpy-Maximum energyis 300J

4. Compression test on timber (Parallel
& Perpendicular) 11

IS: 1708(part 8)- Parallel to Grain

•References:-
IS 1708 (part 9)- Perpendicular to Grain.

•Wood consists of tube-like cells which are tightly cemented together to form a basically
homogeneous material. The cells, which mostly run in the same direction, form fibers, which
constitutethegrain.

•Timber is a structural member used as a column, doors & window heads & jambs, in trusses
etc.

•Timber, when loaded in compression parallel to its grain, is one of the strongest structural
materialsbecause thewoodcellsactasa tinycolumnsor tubes bondedtogether.

5. Bending test on timber
and plywood.
•References:- IS: 1734part 11:Method of testing plywood.

•Timber is one of the most traditional structural materials used for different purposes like
beams, lintels etc. and plywood for formwork hence tests are carried out to determine
bending strength & modulus of elasticity of timber.
•Timber specimen:5x5x75cmor 2x2x30cm
Plywood specimen: 5cmwidth, 12mmdepth & 58cmlength(48 timesdepth)

•As per IS1734-

•Flexural strength =M/Z= 3PL/2bh²

•Modulus of elasticity= PL³/(4x b xh xdeflection)
