OBJECTIVES:

 Analyze the role of social interaction in the shaping of

our consciousness and social reality;and

 Highlight what a focus on actors could provide in

interpreting our social world.
THE ENIGMA OF HUMAN ACTION

Human actions are concrete,physicaland empirical phenomena-

observable,sensory and realistic.Human action is also a function
of consciousness and senses.
PHENOMENOLOGY

It center on how particular

individuals and groups comprehend
the world in which they live.Derived
from the greek word “phenomenon”
which means “that which appears”,it
is about perceiving and analyzing an
observable occurrence.
PHENOMENOLOGIST

Want to capture this practical side of human existence because according to

them,there lies the source of human life-the real social process that is when
people do things just “naturally” and not being too conscious about it.The
practical or phenomenological side of life is the basis for human action and
interaction,the core of social production and creativity.
PHENOMENOLOGIST

Edmund Husserl, German:1859-1938 Peter Berger, Austrian-American,

writing in the mid-1960’s

 Phenomenology is a method aimed at  Berger and Luckmann combined the principle

studying phenomena.It seeks to describe and of “alienation” (a Hegelian legacy) with
analyze the various ways,things,and events phenomenology producing a social reality that
appear to human conscious experience. seems to exhibit an objective existence which
humans can no longer control.
SOCIAL INTERACTION

Served as the roof of human society,the reason why there is such as

“society” in our lives and why it is true to us.Society is both a product and a
project that must be achieved and accomplished through constant interaction
among deliberately participating actors and performers.
SOCIAL INTERACTIONISM

 Cultivated a social theory and method anchored on the idea

that instead of having predetermined knowledge about a
certain phenomenon.
SOCIAL INTERACTIONISTS

 They believe that society is not a static entity that appears

before the individual but,on the contrary,it is the
actors/individuals that carry out the “leading role”.
RATIONAL CHOICE

 Rational choice theory relies heavily on the concept of “rationality” ,albeit

in the narrow connotation of the word-individuals doing,choosing and
selecting the most cost-beneficial method of coming up with the most
benefit and getting results that would serve his/her goals and pursuit in
life.
