Behavior 1.1

Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of

Ethics, relevant laws and regulations, models for ethical decision making,
ethical conduct of research, and additional codes of ethics as appropriate
to context. :
■ Comparison of NASW Code of ethics and codes of ethics.
■ Ask other substance abuse ORC, how certain practices are performed
■ I can use the skills I learned using the NASW Code of ethics to
acknowledge situations in a ethical way as a social worker
Behavior 1.2

Use reflection and self regulation to manage personal values and

maintain professionalism in practice situations.
■ When the social worker and I are doing orientation assessments with
the client , we make sure we understand the condition of the client`s
substance abuse issue. I am able to self reflect and put my judgment
aside for the situation. Many clients have different beliefs from
relapsing and seeing nothing wrong with it or not being able to see
that they need help.
Behavior 1.3

Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and oral

written, and electronic communication.
■ During my internship I make sure I am on time, dress business casual
(only wear jeans on Friday), and affective communication with the
social workers, director, and parole officers. Communication is made
through emails or open communication in the office by asking and
seeking opportunities with substance abuse treatment plans .
Behavior 1.4

Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice

outcomes.
■ Only use phones when needed and social media is permitted while we
are helping the client in the same room. The goal is to be respectful in
front of the client and make sure the social worker is acknowledging
the situation.
Behavior 1.5

Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior

■ I do not do anything without the social worker`s approval :

TASC assessments

principles other than just the professionals

Difference in Practice
Behavior 2.1

Apply and communicate understanding of the importance of diversity

and difference in shaping life experiences in practice at the micro, mezzo
and macro levels.
■ All clients come from different backgrounds and have different
reasons for relying on substance abuse. The agency works on a micro
level with the client because the social workers manage the cases not
have treatments and or other resources within the agency.
Behavior 2.2

Present themselves as learners and engage clients and constituencies as

experts of their own experiences.
■ Encourage the clients to live a better life and not make the same
mistake over again, to end up in the same place. Social workers are a
support system for the clients so that they can learn by a service plan
being given.
Behavior 2.3

Apply self – awareness and self – regulation to manage the influence of

personal biases and values in working with diverse clients and
constituencies.
■ Keeping opinions to ourselves for self – regulation. A client may come
smoking or snorting before they even have there appointment and
know they will fail there drug test. As social workers, we cannot tell
clients about our personal values because it maybe appropriate to the
client.

Economic, and
Environmental Justice
Behavior 3.1

Apply understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to

centers that collaborate to help the clients.

Engage in practices that advance social, economic, and environmental

justice.
■ I attend the meetings every month that the social workers have with
the parole officers to discuss clients, go to CBI meetings, and the
monthly job fairs for the clients.

Apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and

qualitative research methods and research findings.
■ I am doing a advocacy project on assessing the needs for the agency
and substance abuse clients. Most of the research will be on
qualitative research because I am doing the project based on the
agencies opinions.

Apply critical thinking to analyze , formulate, and advocate for policies

that advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental

■ Within my agency project I will be formulating ways to advocate for
the agency and what they are needing within the agency. Brochures
and other advertisements would be made to have at other social
service offices and within our agency as well as online.

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person

– in – environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to
engage with clients and constituencies.
■ Making sure I understand what clients are going through and how it
affects there actions. So when they come in for follow –ups or possible
discharges I need to make sure that the client is taken care of with
resources provided and not going to relapse.
Behavior 6.2

Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage

diverse clients and constituencies.
■ I listen to the client and give feedback as well. Whether they are
personal issues are about their substance abuse case. This is a way
for the social worker and client to engage and show empathy for the
client.
Competency 7:
Assess Individuals,
Families, Groups,
Organizations, and
Communities
Behavior 7.1

Collect and organize data and apply critical thinking to interpret

information from clients and constituencies.
■ The service plan helps the client and the social worker is able to
collect the data from that to see the progress of the client.
Behavior 7.2

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-

in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in
interventions with clients and constituencies.

behavior of the client to see they are willing to change or progress in
there treatment.
Behavior 7.3

Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals and objectives based on

the critical assessment of strengths, needs, and challenges within clients
and constituencies;

making sure to pay court fees, and/or at risk clients that are
struggling with abuse. Also, it is made sure that the client does not
have any triggers or challenges making them want to take drugs
again.
Behavior 7.4

Select appropriate intervention strategies based on the assessment,

research knowledge, and values and preferences of clients and
constituencies.
■ While I am doing the assessment I make sure to keep note of what the
client is charged, whether they are a repeating offender, and any
mental disorders. Interventions strategies would be based on how
severe the client`s abuse is.

Individuals, Families,
Groups,
Organizations, and

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-

in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in
interventions with clients and constituencies.
■ The social worker communicates with the client and their parole
officer to determine the service plan and the ultimate goal for the
client`s substance abuse. Communicating with the client and officer
with the theoretical framework of interventions it can reduce the rates
of recidivism.
Behavior 8.3

Use inter-professional collaboration as appropriate to achieve beneficial

practice outcomes.
■ Inter –professional collaboration would be helping the client access
other social services. Client beneficial practice outcomes would be
meeting with the parole officer regularly, communicating with the
other social workers, and attend meetings on interventions.
Behavior 8.4

Negotiate, mediate, and advocate with and on behalf of diverse clients

one has a support system. With a support system and motivation to
do better it may encourage the client to get off drugs so they do not
go to prison/jail.
Behavior 8.4

Facilitate effective transitions and endings that advance mutually agreed

– on goals.
■ When clients come in for a TASC follow – up that is when a social

the mutual agreed – on goal is not met they have to come back to the
agency for a longer period of time.

would be to make service plans for clients, manage intervention
meetings, and evaluate client in takes.
Behavior 9.2

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, person-

in-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in the
evaluation of outcomes.
■ The evaluation of outcomes would be to understand that not every
client will progress like they should it may take a longer time. But
understand that personal opinions are kept to ourselves and make
sure the social worker respects the client. Also, it is important to verify
a lot of information that the client may provide to make sure there not
lying or on the right track to treatment.
Behavior 9.3

Critically analyze, monitor, and evaluate intervention and program

what clients show up for there appointment.
