SET UP argument
BACKGROUND ( CASE/ PROBLEM)
• Backgrounds are used to clarify the setting of the
debate. (When? Where? In what context?), a lot
of instances, backgrounds cover the problems
aimed to be tackled by the team
• If not explicitly mentioned in the motion. Prime
minister has the ability to responsibly ‘limit’ the
setting of the motions. In most cases where the
actors aren’t specified in the motion, explicit
limitations are not really needed.
 Definition
• Define the meaning of UNCLEAR or DEBATABLE concepts in
the motion
• Definitions must be REASONABLE and must be DEBATABLE
• Unfair definitions: time set, truistic, squirreling etc.
• Facing an unfair definition?
◆ We discourage doing “challenge definition”, but it is an option.
 STANCE
- Stances are your explicit overview of what you support
& what you don’t want to support.
- Stances of Government are usually a straight copy from
the motions
- Oppositions has variety of stances
- 1. Negating the problem stated by team government
- 2. Accepting the problem, and S.Q./current progress will
solve the problem itself
- 3. Accepting the problem, and argue why The proposal
offered by Proposition will make situations worse
- 4. Accepting the problem, and create counter-proposal
 MECHANISM
- In Proposal debates, important & worth-
questioning technicalities should be stated by
1st speakers
- Models are used to prevent unimportant &
avoidable debates.
