 Definition Of Conditional
Sentences
Conditional tenses are used to
speculate about what could happen,
what might have happened, and
what we wish would happen
 Conditional Sentence consists of compound
sentences, that is sentences consisting of the main
clause and Subordinate clause. Both of these
sentences are related to the preposition "If".
Types of Conditional Patterns

Pattern 1 : Probable Condition
Used for actions which are true or
likely to happen
Formula Pattern 1 :

If Present Tense , Future Tense

S + V1 ( s/es ) S + will/shall + V1 or be

Example :

Present Tense Future Tense

If I feel sick, I will not go to school.

If it rains tomorrow, the match will be cancelled.
Pattern 2 : Improbable Condition
Used for present or future activities which
are improbable or unlikely to happen
Formula Pattern 2:

If Past Tense , Would/Should/Might + V1 or be

S + V2
S + did not + V1

Example

Past Tense Would + Verb

If the weather were nice, we would go on a picnic.

Pattern 3 : Imaginary Condition
Used for impossible activities which
could NOT be true or performed
Formula Pattern 3:

If Past Perfect , Past Future Perfect

S + had + V3 S + would have + V3

Example :

Past Perfect Past Future Perfect

If I had had enough money, I would have bought the camera

yesterday.
If I had come home earlier, I would not have missed the
programme.
