INTRODUCTION
 What is a urban heat island?
The urban heat islands (UHI) is a phenomenon where by urban region
experience warmer temperatures than their rural, undeveloped surroundings

 Heat island impacts

 Increased Energy Consumption
 Elevated Emissions of Air Pollutants and Greenhouse Gases
 Compromised Human Health and Comfort 2
 Impaired Water Quality
PROBLEM DEFINITON
 High local temperatures in the UHI may lead to increase the building
air conditioning load while consuming more power by the AC
systems with comparative to a building AC system in a rural area.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES
 Aim:
 Identifying the effect of urban heat island cities to AC load
requirement.

 Objective:
 Identifying the urban heat islands in Sri Lanka.
 Perform a numerical analysis to understand the effect of UHI to the
performance of the urban AC systems.
 Perform a CFD analysis to understand the effect of UHI to the
performance of the urban AC systems.
 Identify the solutions to minimize the effect of UHI and improve the
performance of the AC systems in the urban areas.
4
METHODOLOGY
 Collecting and analysing the weather data of a selected urban area
and a rural area.
 Calculating the AC load requirements for the both conditions.
 Using previous data calculate the performance of the urban AC
systems.
 Introducing suggestions for reducing the effect of urban heat island.
 Perform the simulations with and without the findings to reduce the
UHI effect on AC system.
