INTRODUCTION
Micro teaching is a new concept in the field of
Educational Technology. The term, first of all,
was coined by Dwight W.Allen and his co-
workers in 1961 at Stanford University, U.S.A. It
is now considered as a very effective teacher
training technique at preservice and inservice
level and used as an effective research tool all
over the world.
DEFINITIONS
View of Alfen:-
Allen (1996) defined Micro Teaching as, “a
scaled down teaching encounter in class
size and class time”.In this way teaching is
reduced to simple form.
VIEW OF BUSH

According to Bush, Micro Teaching is , “ a

teacher education teaching technique which
allows teachers to apply well defined teaching
skills to a carefully prepared lesson in a
planned series of five to ten minutes
encounter with small group of real class –
room students, often with an opp0rtunity to
observe the performance on video-tape”.
VIEW OF B.K. PASSI

In the words of B.K. Passi (1976),

“Microteaching is a training technique which
require pupil- teachers to teach a single
concept, using specified technique skills to a
small number of pupils in a short duration of
time”.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MICROTEACHING
• On the basis of above definitions , following
are the features of microteaching:-
 REAL TEACHING SITUATION.
 SCALED DOWN TEACHING.
 INDIVIDUAL TEACHING.
 MORE CONTROLLED.
 FEEDBACK MECHANISM.s
ASSUMPTIONS OF MICRO TEACHING
 Teaching is complex activity. It consists of a
number of simple teaching acts or teaching skills.
 Complex teaching can be broken into simple
teaching skills.
 A teaching skill can be mastered through practice
and by providing feedback.
 Again , mastered teaching skills can be integrated
for real teaching.
 The skill training can be transferred to actual
class- room situation.

TEACHING
PROCEDURES
EXPLANATION OF SKILL
In micro teaching a particular skill is selected.
This skill is defined to student-teachers or
teachers under training in terms of specific
teaching behaviours and objectives of these
behaviours.
DEMONSTRATION

An expert or teacher educator demonstrates the

teaching skill to the student – teachers. The
expert can also show the video recording of that
skill.
PREPARATION OF A MICRO-LESSON
Trainee or student teacher prepares a lesson
plan to demonstrate the chosen skill. Lesson
plan should be for 5-10 minutes teaching. This is
called ‘Plan-session’.
TEACHING
Trainee teaches planned lesson to a small group
of students or peers for a small duration of time
i.e. for 5-10 minutes.
DISCUSSION (FEEDBACK SESSION)
After observing the teaching session of the
trainee, the expert discusses his observations
with the trainee. The expert give his view on how
the lesson can be improved. This is called
feedback.
REPLAN

After receiving the feedback , student –

teacher replans his/her lesson in the light
of suggestions. This lesson is replanned.
RE-TEACH

Revised lesson is retaught to the same class for

the same duration. It will naturally be a better
lesson than the previous one.
REFEEDBACK
Reteaching is again followed by discussions and
providing re-feedback to the student teacher.
This is called the refeedback session.

MICRO TEACHING SETTING
For micro teaching setting we have to set
following things:
SIZE OF THE MICRO CLASS.
TYPES OF PUPILS.
TIME DURATION.
