LTE Advance 3GPP R10

R10 Motivation
Any kind of evolution of communication
is based on a set of common technical
motivation as follows:
 Increase data throughput
 Decrease Latency
 Increase communication efficiency
 Increase the reliability of the data
transaction (especially in cell
boundary)

Overview of UL CoMP
 UL CoMP is coordinating multi-point transmission and reception. UL
CoMP uses multi-antenna reception in uplink
 UL CoMP improves cell coverage and performance, especially the
performance of cell edge users (CEUs)

eNodeB uses antennas in different cells for

uplink multi-antenna reception to mitigate
Cell 1 interference and improve the throughput of
the users in cell edge

 While ICIC coordinates inter-cell interference in the frequency and power
domains, eICIC coordinates inter-cell interference in time domain in addition to
frequency and power domains.
 Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination reduce the interference created
by two or more cells.
 Now we have to think about how we can reduce the interference on Frequency
Domain and Time Domain.

Non-HetNets: UE is in cell boundary of a cell

Homogenous Network vs Heterogenous Network

Homogenous Network : a network composed of all the base stations belong to the same type and power class.
Heterogenous Network : a network composed of different base station type and different power classes.
HetNets : UE is under a coverage of a femto or pico cell

 In Frequency Domain, one way to reduce the interference would be to allocate the resource blocks from multiple neighbouring cells in such
a way that the allocated resource blocks does not overlap each other. For example, if a cell (e.g, serving cell) allocated RB0~10 for a UE, let
neighbouring cell allocate RB 15~20 for another UE.
 In Time Domain, one way to reduce the interference is that a cell (e.g, serving cell) stop transmitting at a certain subframe so that other cell
(e.g, a femto/pico cell) can transmit the signal during that period. But sometimes completely stoping the signal transmission would cause
some issues. So it would be recommended to transmit the signal in very low power in stead of completely stopping the transmission. These
subframe with very low signal power is called 'Almost Blank Subframe (ABS)'.
