CARBON NANOTUBES

CARBON NANOTUBES is a new form of

carbon, configurationally equivalent to two
dimensional graphene sheet rolled into a tube

CNT exhibits extraordinary mechanical

properties,electrical,optical properties
as well as chemical stability
CONTD..
Application areas
• Field Emitters/Emission
• Molecular electronics: CNT based
non volatile RAM
• CNT based transistors
• Energy Storage
• CNT based fibers and fabrics
• CNT based ceramics
• Biomedical applications
Field Emission Display(FED)
 It is a group of Flat panel display(FPD),which is under
development.
 It’s principle of operation is is same like that of a Cathode Ray
Display, except the electron emission.
Design Of CNT FED
 Composed of a of a
faceplate and a backplate,
each made of transparent
display glass
 The faceplate serves as the
anode and the backplate
serves as the cathode.
 separated by a insulating
spacer
Cathode Fabrication  The cathode structure is comprised
of a first metal layer forming the
columns.
 Above the layer, a highly resistive
film is deposited, known as ballast
resistor.
 An insulating (SiO2) layer is
deposited on top of the ballast
layer.
 The gate structure is formed by
depositing a second layer of metal
above the insulator.
 Trench-shaped geometries are
etched in the gate metal and
insulator.
 Using a third mask, pads made of a
material for catalyzing CNT growth
are aligned in the center of these
trenches.
Anode Fabrication
 The anode plate was
fabricated by coating the
phosphor on the glass.
 The phosphor used is of
cathodoluminescence type
i.e. light is created when an
energetic electron beam
strikes it.
 The phosphor screen is
surrounded by a black
matrix.
 Its is surrounded by
conductive aluminum layer

The catalyst on which CNT are grown

Catalyst is a nano supported material.
CNT deposition by CVD
 Methane is used as a source of
carbon.
 Delivered through a flow meter
to the substrate.
 These chips were placed inside a
quartz tube.
 To generate CNTs on a substrate
via CVD, a catalyst is needed.
Iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate,
mixed in isopropanol is mostly
used.
Working principle
 The basic principle of
field emission technology
is emission of electrons
from a material surface
using ‘tunneling effect’

 When sufficient energy is

acquired the electrons
acquire enough energy
and overcome this
potential barrier, created
at the metal vacuum
interface.
FED advantages & disadvantage
advantages disadvantages
• Vacuum tubes do require
 Inherently high luminous
efficiency maintenance.
 No Response Time issues • Often suffer from variation
 Lower Power Consumption in screen brightness across
 Cold Cathode Emission the display, and also within
 Distance between cathode and each pixel.
screen ~0.2–5mm
• Durability
 Cost advantage over LCD .
