Fourier Transform & its Properties

Fourier Series Theorem

• Any periodic function can be expressed as a weighted sum (infinite) of sine

and cosine functions of varying frequency.

• Fourier Transform is a transformation technique which transforms signals

from the continuous-time domain to the corresponding frequency domain
and vice-versa, which applies for both periodic and aperiodic signals.

• Thus it overcomes the demerit of the Fourier series that deals only with
periodic signals. Fourier transform can be developed by finding the fourier
series of a periodic function and tending ‘T’ to infinity.

Types of Fourier Transform

There are two types of Fourier Transform:

• Discrete Time Fourier Transform. (DTFT)

• Continuous Time Fourier Transform. (CTFT)

Continuous Time Fourier Transform

Following are some properties. In the following, we assume F[x(t)] = X(jω) and F[y(t)] = Y(jω).

1. Linearity:

2. Time Shift:

3. Frequency shift:
4. Time and Frequency Scaling:

5. Convolution Theorems:
The convolution theorem states that convolution in time domain corresponds to multiplication
in frequency domain and vice versa:
Discrete Time Fourier Transform

Following are some properties of DTFT. In the following, we assume

F[x(m)] = X(ejω) and F[y(m)] = Y(ejω).
1. Linearity:

2. Time Shift:
3. Frequency shift:

4. Time and Frequency Scaling:

5. Convolution Theorems:
The convolution theorem states that convolution in time domain corresponds to multiplication
in frequency domain and vice versa:
5. Frequency Differentiation:
This property states that:

If x(n) DTFT X(ejω )

DTFT
Then n x(n) j dX(ejω) / dω

6. Scaling:
The scaling property can be expressed as:

If x(n) DTFT X(ejω )

Then y(n) = x(pn) DTFT Y(ejω) = X(e (jω/p))

Uses of Fourier Transform

• The Fourier transform (FT) can decompose a function of time (a signal) into the
frequencies that make it up.

• The most important use of the Fourier transformation is to solve partial differential
equations.

• All the wireless and non-wireless communication in the world relies on Fourier
Transform.

• One of the most used applications of the Fourier Transform is in compression

especially image compression such as JPG.
That was all!
