WHAT IS LINGUISTIC DEV?
 Essential to a child’s ability to communicate
and develop. These skills enable children to
engage with other people and learn from
their surroundings and in the classroom.
 Language skills are about children learning
the rules for putting words together in a way
that will express their thoughts and feelings
and understanding the meaning of both the
written and spoken word.
HOW
 At the initial stage of the primary level, children’s use of
language become more mature and complicated
- Able to understand basic metaphors based on very
concrete ideas ; e.g “hard as a rock”
- Tailor their speech to the social situation
- Ability to understand language at a more complicated
level also develops
- Able to develop “Illocutionary Intent” (the ability to
understand that a sentence may have meaning beyond
the exacts words being spoken
- Children begin to understand words with multiple
meanings
