Week 4: Approaches to Teaching


Writing

1. Product Approach
Target students: Year 4 pupils
Familiarisation
-A text about “My Ambition” will be shown for them to be aware of the
features of the text.
Controlled Writing
-A substitution table will be given for students to practice forming
simple sentences.

Guided Writing
• Teacher provides some of the example of pictures about occupation.
• Some job scope of those occupations will be given.
• Teacher act as facilitator to guide students in the writing.
Free Writing
• The topic “My Ambition” will only be given.
• Students are free to choose any occupation with any reasons of
choosing it.
Process Approach
Prewriting stage
• Pupils will be divided into groups.
• Each group will be given an occupation with mind map.
• Pupils are required to brainstorm the characteristics and reasons of
achieving their ambition.
Composing/ Drafting stage
• Pupils need to discuss and choose three main ideas to come out with
a draft.
Revising stage
• Pupils revise their draft and add in more elaborations which are lack
off in the draft.
Editing stage
• They try to complete the essay by correcting their mistakes.
Genre Approach
Modelling
• Teacher introduces the format of a formal letter by using a sample
formal letter.
Joint construction of a text
• Pupils produce one sample letter with teacher.
Independent construction
• Pupils will write their own letter now.
