Electrical safety

Awareness
Introduction
• Electricity is essential to modem life, both at
home and on the job.

• Electricity often is not treated with the respect

it deserves.

• Statistics reported that Six percent of the

fatalities yearly due to direct result of
electrocutions at work.
How Shocks Occur?
• Electricity travels in closed circuits.
• Electric shock occurs when the body
becomes a part of the electric circuit.
• Electric shock normally occurs in one of three
ways:
 Individuals-while in contact with the ground- must
come in contact with both wires of the electric
circuit.
 one wire of an energized circuit and the ground,
or
• metallic part that has become "hot" by contact
with an energized conductor.
Severity of the Shock
Current Reaction
(amps)

0.001 Perception level, a faint tingle

0.005 Slight shock felt; disturbing, but not painful.

Average person can let go. However, vigorous
involuntary reactions to shocks in this range can
cause accidents.
0.006 - Painful shock; muscular control is lost. Called
0.025 W freezing or "let-go" range
0.009 - 0.03
M -
0.050 Extreme pain, respiratory arrest, and severe
0.150 muscular contractions. Individual normally
cannot let go unless knocked away by muscle
action, death is possible.
1 - 4.3 Ventricular fibrillation (rhythmic pumping action
of heart ceases); muscular contraction and nerve
damage occur; death is most likely.
10 Cardiac arrest, severe burns, and probably death.
Preventing Electrical Hazards

• insulation.

• Grounding.

• Guarding.

• Circuit protection devices.

• Safe work practices.

• Training.
