What is ChE 413N all about?

• The science and engineering of

materials is an interdisciplinary field
concerned with inventing new
materials and improving known
materials by developing a deeper
understanding of the microstructure-
synthesis-processing relationships.
What are the Objectives of the
Course?
Apply the principles of materials science and
engineering as a vital tool in carrying the
design of equipment;
Develop the ability to make informed,
scientific decisions involving materials
selection and processing; and
Develop interpersonal and communication
skills
 PO1: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering sciences
to the practice of chemical engineering.
 PO2: An ability to design and conduct experiments to test hypotheses and verify assumptions,
as well as to analyze and interpret data and to simulate processes.
 PO3: An ability to design, improve, innovate, and to supervise systems or processes to meet
desired need within realistic constraints.
 PO4: An ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in diverse fields
of practice.
 PO5: An ability to identify, formulate, and solve chemical engineering problems.
 PO6: An understanding of the effects and impact of the chemical engineering profession on the
environment and society, as well as the social and ethical responsibilities of the profession.
 PO7: The specialized knowledge in at least one field of chemical engineering practice, and the
ability to apply such knowledge to provide solutions to actual problems.
 PO8: An ability for effective oral and written communications particularly in the English language.
 PO9: An ability to engage in life-long learning and to keep abreast of the current trends and
development in a specific field of specialization.
 PO10: An ability to use the appropriate techniques, skills and tools necessary for the practice of
chemical engineering.
 PO11: A knowledge of contemporary issues.
• CO 1: Explain how structure, properties, synthesis and
processing affect the performance of a material
• CO 2: Describe how a material commonly
encountered in engineering applications would
behave under certain conditions
• CO 3: Propose ways of processing materials in order to
create a material with better or improved properties
while being aware of the limitations set by the
material’s properties
• CO 4: Select the best possible materials given a certain
set of process conditions or requirements
• CO 5: Communicate information effectively in oral and
in written form

What are the Class Policies &
Guidelines in ChE 413N?
• EXAMS
– Long exams will be announced while daily quizzes may be either be
announced or unannounced.
– Submit sheets of yellow paper a meeting before the scheduled long exam.
Failure to submit gets a demerit of 10%.
– If a student misses two (2) long exams, then he/she shall get a final grade of
NC.
– If a student misses one (1) long exam, unexcused, then he/she shall get a
grade of zero in that exam.
– If a student comes in 15 minutes late during exams, then he/she cannot take
the exam anymore.
– A student is not allowed to go out during exams.
– No final exam permit, no grade!
– Students can view checked exams but are not allowed to bring them home.
– Students are given the chance to raise questions regarding their scores during
the viewing of their exam results.
– Turn off mobile phone or put it on silent mode.
What are the Class Policies &
Guidelines in ChE 413N?
• PRESENTATIONS
– A topic is assigned to each group.
– Each group consists of four to five members.
– Each group must prepare an oral presentation and a
written report of the assigned topic.
– Oral Presentation
• Oral presentations are preferably done in PowerPoint or if it is not
possible, use an overhead projector.
• Students must provide their own laptop.
• Oral presentations shall be rated using grading rubrics.
• Guideline details shall be provided by the instructor.
• No oral presentation, final grade of NC.
– Written Report
• Report must be written on a short bondpaper.
• Written reports shall be rated using grading rubrics.
• No written report, final grade of NC.
