We need to know how to reduce a clause
to make our writing more effective to read.

Ineffective sentences
REVIEW:
 The man who is studying foreign language is
determined to become a translator.
INDEPENDENT CLAUSE??
DEPENDENT CLAUSE??
InDep.Clause: The man is determined to become a
translator.
Dep.Clause : who is studying foreign language
REVIEW:
 The topics which were presented in seminar were
interesting.
INDEPENDENT CLAUSE??
DEPENDENT CLAUSE??
Indep Clause: The topics were interesting
Dep.Clause : which were presented in seminar

REVIEW:
 Anyone who wants to improve himself is motivated

Indep.Clause: Anyone is motivated.
Dep.Clause: who wants to improve himself
Anyone who wants to improve himself is
motivated
 The man who is studying foreign language is

You can also say:
 The man studying foreign language is determined

to become a translator.
AGAIN
Clause:
 The topics which were presented in seminar were
interesting
You can also say:
 The topics presented in seminar were interesting

Clause:
 Anyone who wants to improve himself is motivated

You can also say :


 Anyone wanting to improve himself is motivated
SO, ADJECTIVE PHRASES....
SO, A PARTICIPIAL PHRASE IS....
 A “REDUCTION” OF AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE
 A participial phrase has no subject and no predicate; it
modifies a noun or pronoun
 Only adjective clause using the pronouns WHO,
WHICH, or THAT (If only there is no subject after them)
can be changed to participial phrase.
GENERAL FORM:
If the adjective clause has “be” form (for example:
nominative sentence or passive sentence), DROP the
PRONOUN and “BE”
 The man who is studying foreign language is
determined to become a translator.
The man studying foreign language is determined
to become a translator.
 The topics which were presented in seminar were
interesting.
The topics presented in seminar were interesting
If the adjective clause is active form, drop the pronoun
and change the verb to an-ing form!
 Anyone who wants to improve himself is motivated.

Anyone wanting to improve himself is motivated.
