ControlLogix Based System

Introduction to the Allen Bradley logix 5000 PLC

based Control System used on SIEMENS
Turbines in Lincoln
Basic System Overview
• PLC is Logix 5000 series
• Distributed I/O connections
• Separate Core Engine Controller (C.E.C.)
• PC based display system “IDS” Wonderware
• ECU Fuel Controller
• DLE Combustion System and Emission
controls
Logix 5000 Rack
• Power Supply 120 – 240 V AC or 24V DC
• Standard is 13 Slot Rack 1756-A13
Logix 5000 Processor
• PLC programmed in traditional “Ladder” and
“Function Block” language
• Flash Non Volatile memory
• Battery Backed memory (not really used now)
• Contains 3.5MB of RAM
• Connection to processor via Serial @ 19200
• Ethernet connection – much faster
• Currently using Logix version 8 – plans to
“move up” in near future
5000 Processor LED’S
• RUN - OFF The contoller is in PROG or TEST
GREEN The controller is in RUN mode
• I/O - OFF No devices in I/O configuration
GREEN I/O configuration is OK
GREEN FLASH some I/O not responding
RED FLASH The chassis needs replacing
• RS232 - OFF There is no activity
GREEN Data is being processed
• BAT - OFF The battery is good
RED The battery needs replacing
• O.K - OFF No power is applied to the module
GREEN unit ok
RED FLASH Recoverable fault
RED Non recoverable fault
SAM (CEC) Module
• Pentium II PC 233 MHz “Special Application
Module”
• Runs DOS or WinCE on latest versions (can be
upgraded in most cases)
• Communicates to PLC processor via Backplane
• RIUP (Removal and insertion under power)
• Runs “BEACON” application code
• BEACON is compiled “C” code
• Logic defined in Beacon Diagrams similar to flow
chart language.
• Software stored on 32 MB Compact Flash Card
• Software cannot be changed on site
SAM (CEC) Module
• Normal connection for maintenance
channel through the COM 2 port
• 19200 Baud serial connection via
“Windows HyperTerminal”
• Mouse/KBD and VGA port can be
used for low level diagnostics but not
normally connected.
ControlNet Bridge
• 1756 – CNBR
• Connects the processor to “Distributed I/O”
points on skid and other remote devices
• “Flex I/O” blocks close to physical devices
• Cross Site cables significantly reduced
• Up to 99 nodes each with 8 modules
• Each node (Gateway) has unique address
• Accepts Intrinsically Safe and non I.S. modules
• Dual Redundant network “A” & “B”
• RUIP (Removal and insertion under power)
MCM COMMS MODULE

• MVI56 MCM Modbus module

• MVI56 has three active serial ports
• PRT1 Debug / configuration RS232
• PRT2 Modbus master /slave RS232
• PRT3 Modbus master /slave RS232
• MVI56 has active LED indicators
• Connected normally to A Bently
Nevada rack.

DeviceNet Bridge
• 1756 – DNB
• Connects the processor to other devices such
as the ECU
• High speed communication for Gas and Liquid
fuel demands
• Reads in other data from the ECU such as
pressures and temperatures
Ethernet Comms
• Provides communication via Ethernet 10/100
Base T to Controller
• Provides connection for Display System
• Provides Programming Terminal Interface
• We use a fixed IP address normally
192.168.0.101
• More recent versions scroll the IP address in
display panel at top of card
