Central Heating problems & troubleshooting
in Philadelphia University
 The most prominent problems:-
 Most central heating problems are seasonal, especially in
the autumn when the system has been “asleep” all
summer and colder weather prompts us to turn on our
heating.
 Radiator only warm at the bottom.
 Radiator is cold at the bottom and warm at the top.
 Some of the radiators are hotter than others.
 Hot water, but cold radiators or cold water, but hot
radiators.
 Over-flow don’t stop running.
 the boiler is making noise & black smoke.
 Loss of Pressure in the System.
 Problems with a fuel appliance.
 If the fuel appliances aren't working properly, it can mean that they're more
likely to break down, but also they could cause leaks, carbon monoxide
poisoning, fires and explosions.
 pumping out a continuous supply of heating and hot water. But if a fault
develops, a broken boiler can cause untold misery to descend, Lead into
chaos.
 Leaking and dripping – a variety of issues could cause the boiler to leak
water. It will depend on where the water is leaking from to determine the
cause.
Heating Problems – and fix them
Radiator only warm at the bottom
This is perhaps the simplest and most common problem to fix. It just means that there is air trapped in
the radiator, which stops the hot water from circulating around the radiator effectively. In order to get
that air should to bleed the radiator.
Step 1:- Turn off the pump, so don't end up pushing more air into the system.
Step 2:- At the top right or top left corner of the radiator should find a square brass nut. This can only
be turned using a radiator key
The valve will normally be powered by electricity – effectively, it is an electro-magnet that becomes
charged and then pulls the valve one of two ways. Turn off the electrical power to the system, there
should be an obvious switch somewhere, and then try turning it on again.
Step 3:- Put a bucket on the ground under the end of the radiator you're working on. Take the key and
turn it about 45-90 degrees anti-clockwise, or until hear the air hissing out. Let it hiss away until dirty
water begins to squirt into the bucket.
Step 4:- Tightly close the valve, and check it later to ensure there is no leakage.
Radiator is cold at the bottom and warm at the top
If the radiator is cold at the bottom and warm at the top and this problem persists, then there may be
some sludge at the bottom of the radiator and it may need flushing out. For this, the radiator will
need to be taken off the wall, flushed out with water and refitted.
If the radiators are working correctly but are not hot enough or are too hot then you can alter the
temperature by either adjusting the controls on the boiler or for more modern radiators with their
own temperature controls, simply turn up or down accordingly.

Some of the radiators are hotter than others

Having one or more radiators that stubbornly refuse to heat up can be enormously frustrating. should
first check the valves on either side of the radiator, which control the flow of water to and through the
radiator. should these are both open. The so-called lock shield valve (the smaller valve that controls
water reaching the radiator) may also need to be opened further if the radiator is a long way from the
boiler or if there some take longer to warm up in the morning.
Hot water, but cold radiators or cold water, but
hot radiators
Before anything else, check thermostat. This is a small dial located on the wall somewhere around the
university . It has a temperature scale, generally from 0 to around 30, which allows you to set the
desired ambient temperature. Check the dial and turn it to 17-20 degrees. Check if the radiators begin
to warm up.

the boiler is making noise & black smoke

Loud noises from the boiler are often a sign of a serious problem.to be sure
If the thermostat is set too high it can lead to overheating the water in the boiler, making the noise
hear. Unfortunately, turning the thermostat down may hamper the radiators reaching the right
temperature.
If it's not the thermostat set too high, it could need to descale the boiler as described above, as lime
scale can cause parts of the boiler to overheat.
The university can fix all problem by :
 contract a specialist company in central heating to install new devices,
maintain it , and check it in a Fixed period
 hire a specialist technician in central heaters
the best in this option is:
contract a specialist company in central heating This is because the
company will abide by a contract that cannot be left behind so that
it cannot be backward because that leads to legal issues
conclusion

By understanding central heating and how it works at the university and

addressing its problems , we found several solutions to limit all the
problems of heating in all its aspects and after the comparison found the
most appropriate solution to reduce the weakness of heating , its dangers
and inconvenience because the university does not care about the repeated
maintenance.
